I'm looking to put together a couple bug out bags and I was looking at the USGI Molle II 3-day assault packs .  Anyone using these? and do they make a good bug out bag?  (me being former Navy, I don't have any experience with these)

Was also looking at Condor or Rothco bags, but I'm leaning towards the USGI stuff

Thanks

There's a long & great thread here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_18/506065_BOB_what_it_should_be_.html

I recommend going through it. Some examples of different types, from .mil - style, to backpacker-style bags. Different loadouts, etc. Personally, I have the Camelbak BFM, in black, for myself & a Kelty for the Misses.

I am on my third GHB

Once you get started and you go out and test them you will be constantly updating it for your needs.

Good luck, and put up pictures when you get one assembled.

Good idea looking at link above.  I think that the GI assault pack would be a bit small for your needs.  Strongly suggest you avoid Rothco, and I also suggest staying away from Condor, etc.,packs, as there are some questions about durability. Some like 'em, some don't.

I used a Maxpedition vulture pack in Iraq for two of my tours the pack is nearing 10 years old now and it has worked great for me holds a lot of items has all the ALICE /MOLLE webbing you need. Good thing is that it is low profile never had anyone look twice when I carried it since I have been out of the military. The new one is even tougher and has a lot more goodies on it like being able to place a holster were the hydration pouch is and many other upgrades.

Although the USGI Assault packs are a quality make, they do not have some of the features as other retailers- meaning they are basically just a couple large pockets, very little organized space, hardly any molle webbing, and not the most comfortable shoulder straps.  Avoid Rothco/Condor for packs, I would look at either the Maxpedition Condor or Vulture 2 depending on whether you want the smaller/larger size, a 5.11 tactical Rush 24 or 72 again depending on size, or something like the Camelbak Motherlode.  I own all of these packs, or rather the Condor, Rush 72, and Motherlode, and can definitely recommend any of them over the USGI.  Yes they are more expensive, but for a BOB you want something that will be comfortable to carry over long distances and I am not a big fan of the USGI shoulder straps or hip/sternum straps.

Go to "Spec-ops.com" and check out "the bag". it's on sale now for $99, in coyote tan. Great bags, made in texas.
mine just arrived two days ago. I should have ordered an additional one.

I picked one up and have used mine hiking a few times. It is a TOUGH pack which is perfect for a BoB.

Anyone having Spec-Ops THE Pack would be well advised to also obtain the reinforced frame sheet for same; will make using the pack aLOT more comfortable:  http://www.specopsbrand.com/tactical-gear/packs/t-h-e-pack-frame-black.html  Read the reviews; those having the frame sheet really appreciated it.
