| looking at some danners, what other brands do I need to look at for long term shtf use? |

Quoted:
Danners 1+ Get tradional sewn on outsole instead of newer glued on outersole. The sewn on outersole can be replaced and the glued on one cannot. I had a pair that went through several replacements. I have Danner 'Instigator' hiking boots and Danner 'Instigator' work boots. The only difference is the work boots have a composite toe. They have bern good boots in the 6 months I've had them. Just bought a pair of Vasque 'Breeze' for hiking too and the fit and feel is better than my Danners. Of course everybody's feet are different. |

Magnum boots is having a really good sale on their boots right now. I just picked up a pair of their Spider 5.1 Urbans for $75 bucks, half of what they normally were.

| Not all Danners are made in America. I wear these boots 5 days a week andpoor work, my work involves daily hiking. I wear out Danners crap Chinese "Striker" boots in about 1 month versus their American made traditional Danner in about 9 months to a year. DannerTrax |

People RAVE about Danners, but I bought a pair of their combat hikers with the intent of wearing them to work everyday. I'm on a concrete floor and gave the two weeks to "break in". After two weeks, my legs hurt so bad that I gave up. I was less than impressed.
I bought a pair of Keen work boots and they are the most comfortable shoe sI have ever put on. |

I generally like Danners' traditional military boots, but you're right about the combat hikers. I was issued the combat hikers two years ago, and they're the most uncomfortable, PITA to wear boots I've had the displeasure to wear. |

I bought them brand new at a surplus store. They're a goodlooking boot and I was very disappointed. I'll just where them when we go out to eat, etc. |

Soyou bought a pair of boots designed to be worn on dirt, and they caused pain when you wore them on concrete?
Shocking!!! |

Shocking!!! HAHA! Well, I never thought of it that way. I certainly can't argue with your logic, but I assure you these things aren't comfortable anywhere. The sole is to stiff. It's like walking with a rigid piece of steele strapped under you foot. |

Gotta match the tool to the job. Know your surface and match the sole to it. Soyou bought a pair of boots designed to be worn on dirt, and they caused pain when you wore them on concrete?

Shocking!!! Mine sucked during the breaking in period––no sweat, I expected that. But they never stopped sucking even after they were broken in. After 5-6 hours of wearing them hunting, my feet are done with 'em. |

Danner's don't fit my feet very well.
Been using Matterhorn's for years and they are my goto boot. I recently started using the Asolo brand for hiking and backpacking. They are another quality boot with great fit for me. I'm a cheap ass and like to order boots online. I know Matterhorns and Asolo's will fit. I'd always suggest trying on a new brand in person, even if buying online. |

Do sign up for the Break Room. I have bougt three pair of USA made boots on the site for the price of 1.5 at regular list price. I wont buy their non USA made boots as you can buy that quality at Cabelas or Bass Pro for under 100. USA made Danners are excellent boots.

I've been working and 'outdooring' in a pair of Rocky S2V's for about eight months. They really are great boots. Light, comfy and dry fast. My job consists of a lot of walking, climbing, and driving different heavy equipment. Needless to say, I work the piss-shit out of them and they are holding up strong.
But, if there's one thing that stands out the most, it would be that after a normal day's 11 hours of work, I come home and I'm not saying "dang, get these boots off me." They really are that comfortable to me. Not to mention the olive color goes with all my camo! |

My favorite boots are Alico, which STP carries http://www.sierratradingpost.com/alico-tahoe-hiking-boots-for-men~p~63669/?filterString=s~alico-boots-for-men%2F&colorFamily=32
I have several different Danner (USA) boots, including the combat hiker, and all are comfortable. Whatever boot you get, buy a quality insole to replace the junk insole supplied with all boots (I use Superfeet). |

White's Boot Company's Original Smoke Jumpers are THE 'buy once-cry once' boot. http://www.whitesboots.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29868 ![]() Everything else is a 'wanna-be'. |

White's Boot Company's Original Smoke Jumpers are THE 'buy once-cry once' boot. Depends what you are doing, they aren't the sort of thing most people would enjoy through hiking the AT in. I wore matterhorn rangers for many many years. I loved them, but I didn't realize how much more comfortable lighter more breathable boots were. Yes, the matterhorns were tough mofo's but after discovering newer lighter weight designs and the comfort they afford I am unlikely to go back. Those Whites strike me as being much the same, heavy, poor breathing, but virtually indestructable. If I was smoke jumping thats exactly what I would want, but for general purpose woods and daily wear, I can see those getting old really fast. |

I wouldn't exactly say a "life time," but a long time, but they do wear out.
The made in USA Danners with the fully sewed on soles are also re-buildable at Danner for a fee. This makes them lifetime purchases. For a hundred something bucks, you get your like new $300 boots back. Can't beat that. BTW, for civilian "made in the USA," they may be assembled in the USA, but leather maybe may or may not be made in the USA. True US mil-spec boots where both the labor and leather are USA. Also sewn-in outsoles are rebuildable, but they also weigh ~.0.5lb more than their glued on counterparts, and since they are on the end of your leg, that translated to about a 0.75lbs. |

Depends what you are doing, they aren't the sort of thing most people would enjoy through hiking the AT in. As this is the Survival Gear Forum and not the 'weekend camping with the kids forum', what does hiking the AT have to do with anything? I figured indestructability would rate up there, as well as the lack of boot vendors in a survival situation. The Smoke Jumpers are boots....made to protect your feet and ankles from harm. Sprain you ankle in a survival situation and thing get exponentially more dire. |

6 months ago I would have raved about Danners and told you you'd be a fool to buy anything else, but this last pair (4th in 10 years) has been absolute garbage. They fit unlike any of the old 3 pair and are flat out uncomfortable. And with a $300 price tag I also got the standard reply, "Why'd you wear them outside if they didn't fit." when I asked Danner why they were different than all the other ones I own. I guess I was supposed to wear them around the house for a month until they broke in... FWFW, I had good luck with Matterhorn and Rocky in the past, also. |
|
I had a pair of White's smokejumpers for years and they are ok if you aren't walking very far. They were nice boots and may be tough and rebuildable but so are plenty of other good boots out there. The White's/Hathorn Sportsman would be a better choice IMHO- or even a good pair of Russels... The Smokejumpers work well within a specific range of uses but without knowing how the OP intends to use his boots I would definitely not call them a good boot for all tasks, they are really a boot specialized for a specific and small range of uses. Boots are like tools and no one type suits all tasks equally well, it is difficult to judge what is right for anyone without knowing what sort of use they are going to subject them to. I
FWIW -THROUGH (Thru) hiking the AT is a 2,184mile hike done all in one shot, not exactly weekend camping with the kids. |

I contemplate the light weight verses boot that will help you get out of hell more and more often then a light weight hiker. I humped with Danner Arcdias and such. I love light weight hikers and all. At the end of the day, logger boots with real ankle support make more sense in SHTF type situations. Spec Ops have back up(medics, hello support, etc) alone in the wild ! I have me. Just something to think about. I want real ankle support. |

Heavyweight hiking and utility boots will have an exponentially longer life. |
| I saw someone mention the Rat Boot. Here is the Bates Version on clearance. I have a pair of Merrils and love em. |
