| I am looking for emergency candles to stock up on. Locally I can get 10 for $2.99, but they are kinda tall and skinny. Looking to see if anyone has a good source to buy some either on line or in a store....Thanks, Scott |

Looking to see if anyone has a good source to buy some either on line or in a store....Thanks, Scott Being in Miami, I keep some candles around, just for when the power goes out for a while (not necessarily a hurricane) like it did for no reason during the entire second half of the Steelers v. Seahawks Super Bowl in '06. I even picked up a soy candle kit to make my own for cheap, but I don't like soy wax. You can get kits on Ebay to make your own out of standard parafin, like I do now––buying a 10-15# block at a 'Crafts Store' like Michaels. Use any mold you can find (I like Miller Lite tallboy cans,) die them whatever color you want, scent them if you please, add multiple wicks to the wide ones and they turn out pretty well. Good wide candles aren't cheap, if you price them out. You can find candle sticks on sale and those work well for emergencies, so keep your eyes open the next time you're at the flea market, dollar store, Target or Macys. I've got 'safety candles' in my first little kit, about a good inch and a quarter/half in diameter, four inches plus, metal cap on the bottom, so they'll stand easily, but I don't know what I paid for them and how long they'll burn for, but they look fine, if not a bit short. These Sterno 60 hour candles are pretty good. You can get them at WalMart. I recall them being around $3.50 each.

I make my own using stubs of previous candles (wife can't seem to go a day without lighting a candle). One trick I've discovered is using a "candle warmer" to melt the wax. Get one from the local craft store (Michaels here in MD) and use an appropriately sized van as the melting pot. No need to mess with double boilers, etc. The main drawback is that they are somewhat temperature limited, so it has some issues with some higher melting point waxes. But that can be worked around. I've had good luck over the years with the 9-hour UCO Candle Lantern candles. You can use them with a Candle Lantern or without. Candles, I buy whoever has them on sale and how many, typically early Christmas season and right after Christmas you find major bargains.
Keep in mind when looking at UCO candles and candle lanterns, UCO also makes a smaller tea candle lantern. I'm a fan of tea candles. They have just enough light for one nights use, come with their own base, and because they are so short, you don't have to worry as much about tipping so aren't melting wax and sticking candles down on it. They are amazingly inexpensive around Christmas time at places like Big Lots, Hobby Lobby, etc. Tj |
