swim trunks on the water - underwear on land...

you could also wear spandex bike shorts as underwear if you're worried about the water

Hope this helps...

Under Armour boxer briefs.  Fully synthetic, wick nicely, and dry quickly.

I found the XGO  FR boxer briefs held up well in the field overseas...comfortable, easy to clean in field environment. I still keep a pair packed in the BOB for that reason.

You're over thinking it.

You're not going to be sleeping on a canoe waiting any second to tip over.  Its as simple as if the body of water is so big you can't reach shore at night, man, are you in too small a boat.  The entire problem with this best drying wicking philosophy is ultimately you don't give a shit wool insulates better wet than cotton because both of them wet sucks.  Same goes for synthetics.

It really is as simple as keep dry clothes for sleeping at night.  Trunks during the day and your normal clothes at night, the simplest answer is the answer.

I have wet suits I keep in my boat for winter time have to get into the water, I don't want to be sitting around in that damn thing more than I have to.  I'd freeze my ass off.  Same goes for swim trunks.  What you going to do if you swim late, stand grotch over a fire?  Go to sleep with wet synthetic between your legs and your balls?

Nah, throw yourself a 2-3 pairs of Hanes or whatever in a tied off garbage bag, and don't over think it.  You'll just end up tactical cool or yuppie spandex and miserable.

I have done plenty of 100°F plus backpacking trip on the west coast in cotton BVDs.  This time of year, insulation is seldom the problem

There are Hanes boxer breifs at Target that are a cotton/synth blend.  Good for summertime.

At target in the "sports underwear" section, I exclusively (as in that is all I wear) use a synthetic spandex long leg boxer brief thing with fly. They are about 12 bucks each, but WORTH every penny. Moisture wicking, and will prevent chafing.

Jockey sport are just as good and less expensive than UnderArmour.  I used to have the UA stuff but switched when I found Jockey.

I'm a big fan of synthetic underwear

+100, get the ones with the longer legs(IE they almost go down to your knee). I use them for running and they're awesome.

All I wear for work, dress, working out, camping, everything. Exofficio costs more and wears out faster. I have UA boxer briefs that are 10 years old and actually made better than the new stuff I own from UA. still... get long UA briefs and you will be shocked hou waited your whole life to try they. Seems silly, but it is not.
