Looking for some good wool blankets, like 80%+ wool and am having trouble finding any. I know a few years back there were Itailian Military ones about every where for like $20 but they seemed to have dried up. All I can really find is Russian which are 50% or others that are $40 before shipping. Anyone know a good source?

Do you have Mills Fleet Farm stores down there?
They have Swiss ones or similar. I got queen size heavy wool rust color one and a off white with three colored stripes copy of Whitney from Wool Mill in MN for 70 bucks for both including shipping off ebay. Probably 200-300 retail. Rust one needed stitching on satin trim piece on end. The other was perfect. |

cheaper than dirt has 60" x 80" wool blankets 30% $69.97 or $79.97 (package of 12) 40% $7.97 50% $9.97 60% $11.97 70% $19.97 Unless they found a new supplier i would stay away from the CTD blankets. I read the reviews on them and like an idiot I ignored them. the blanket i got literally fell to pieces the first time it was washed. But what do you expect for 12 bucks. |

I got one of these through EE. I really like it.

I have a few GI blankets that I picked up at yard sales and the GoodWell.
Even if I had a job there is no way I could afford a 100.00 plus blacket. One was stitch togather with another blanket. Make it about 80 inch squard. Would like to make another one. And put both togather, on top of each other, on three sides. Fourth side velcro togather. So is there any way to tell just what percentage of wool your blanket is? PITA45

I am happy with my 2 wool blankets from oldgrouch. My uncle has a nice old us surplus one he is happy with. I don't know how mine really compare with the other stuff available, but mine are great and I have them on my bed this winter since I keep temps kind of low in the house. I have also used mine for sleeping in the jeep as well, just fold down the back seats and there is enough room to stretch out and sleep for me. In a past thread the wool blankets were compared to the microfiber blankets out there. I have a couple of walmart microfiber blankets as well and they do ok. The best thing about the microfiber is they don't hold water much, when I wash them they come out of the washer close to being dry and I have an old low speed washer. I still like my wool blankets from old grouch. Will probably buy some more later this year since I like them. |

I went ahead and ordered a Bundeswehr Wool Blanket from Deutsche Optik.
It was supposed to measure 67" X 40" but mine is 74" X 40". Seems like the perfect size to go over my sleeping bag. |

Quick review of the harbor freight 60 x 80 wool blanket
I needed a couple of cheap but big wool blankets The ones linked previously in this thread looked good, but online orders tend to snowball in size and cost so I put off ordering to protect my credit.
Harbor freight carries the one above but the two local HF's were both out of stock and they are on back order on their website. Happened to check the closest one today and they had a few in stock on sale for $6.99! They are 60" x 80", 80/20 wool/poly blend, charcoal grey in color. Weight/thickness is similar to other wool blankets I own and it's nice and warm. The attached label says "dry clean only" but does not indicate point of manufacture, however the package label said "made in india". Downsides: They stink like machine oil. Yep, that's right, they stink. It's a very noticeable odor upon opening the package. It could be the natural lanolin but I don't recall any wool item ever smelling like this. Perhaps it's from whatever they used to dye the wool. Fortunately the odor isn't foul or sour so if airing it out reduces the odor all will be good. Bottom line: for $6.99 it's a no brainer, particularly if you have a lousy sense of smell like me. |

I picked up a rather large one the other day that appears to possibly be G.I. It's marked 65% new wool and 35% recycled wool. It has a contract number and vendor name on it.
Anyway, I got it for a dollar out of a box of other stuff at a garage sale, so I'm pretty happy after seeing what new ones can go for. I washed it in my washing machine using some directions on the net. You basically soak and wash in the washing machine, but don't let the agitator run. Seems to have worked OK. |

I was lucky and picked up a real Swiss blanket for $50 last year. They normally go for hundreds. I really suggest trying to find some US GI wool blankets! I have a few of these and they are warm! http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n128/mazawakhan/IMG_1690.jpg I got one of those at a yard sale last year for $1, and passed on the 2 other ones they had. Man that was a big mistake!! |

But even if they did smell, I still would have bought them and either aired them out or run them through the washing machine. As far as the back order, they must be selling a lot of them. Buy one, if you don't like it, don't buy any more. Simple. |

Wool blankets suck when they get wet, check out the GI rain poncho liner. When in the bush we use the poncho liner they are light and if the get wet they dry pretty quick around a fire and cheap One of the benefits of wool over other materials is their abiity to keep their insulation value even when wet. Very few synthentic materials are better than wool if you know you're going to get wet. |

Very few synthentic materials are better than wool if you know you're going to get wet. Which is why washing them or wool sweaters is a bad idea. If it's for serious outdoor use don't remove the natural lanolin. |

I was in the market for a wool blanket and happened to see fleece in the local fabric store. My baby-momma made a fleece blanket for me for about $15 in materials. It is doubled layered, orange and olive drab. She sewed one of my name tapes in one corner. Looks great and is super warm. Bulkier than wool though, and most likely does not insulate as well when wet.

| Anybody know where to get a deal on Faribault Mill 'Foot Soldier" blankets? 100% wool, made in the US, great size (90x66) and a couple of color choices but pretty expensive straight from the factory Faribault Foot Soldier Blanket |

I bought the same "wool" blanket from CTD, I tried to wash the stink out in the washer and ended up with a couple handfulls of green crap. The blanket is still together, albeit thinner and kinda patchy looking. Im a fan of real USGI wool blankets, and buy them up every chance I get. |

Well, since nobody has mention this so far, I will.
The absolute best wool blanket, that will last a lifetime, is made by Pendleton |

Might not be latest-n-greatest, but sites catering to Civil War reenactors tend to have some wool blanket options (and no, I'm not a CW type...but I was googling for blankets and ground-sheets one day).
Here's one vendor. About 1/3 down this page is another. Might not be the greatest option ( ), but they're out there too.
And no, I haven't bought anything from either of those sellers, so I don't know if they're any good. Just Google hits I had once upon a time and bookmarked for reference. |

That first link's Swiss Style (Chestnut with Red Stripe) blanket is available from here-> for $17 cheaper. Looks to be the same blanket. |

Germans are really wonderful for when it's very cold and they are very high quality. The Italian are the ones that I tend to use the most. |

Quality is just OK. They are probably worth the $20. I didn't start acquiring blankets until all the original Swiss & German & Dutch were all gone. This is where we are now. |
| Hudson Bay point blankets are pretty damned nice, but probably $250+. Probably not what yer looking for, but thought I'd throw it out anyhow. Buckskinner/muzzleloader/trapper types are likely familiar with these as they'd be fashioned into capotes/coats among other uses. |
