What are you guys using for pillows? I know I saw someone in another post on here I think say roll up your fleece and be done with it but It can get quite cold up here and I have had to sleep in my fleece.

Ah, one of my favorite light topics! Due to family and life, I have four vehicles and not a one of them doesn't have a throw cushion to be used as a pillow for those take a nap or just rest times. Finding the right cushion for your car is art form. Every vehicle is a little different. Some a little pillow works just fine, some an odd shape is best, but seldom is a big full size pillow a fit. They're just too big. Its fun just finding the right one. For years now camping, I've used stuff sacks for sleeping bags and whatever dry clothes I have. Recently which for a guy my age is years not months, I bought some of those hiking pillows that have memory type foam on one side and are inflatable. They're pretty nice but really I guess I'm lazy when it comes to pillows because I neither have the inclination to carry them in a pack nor take the time to inflate them. They ride now under the seat in a vehicle I guess as a guest pillow. I guess a lot of this comes from an active outdoor youth though I can't recall ever taking a pillow back then, I sure made one each and every time from either leaves, log, and even a rock. Its kind of life's irony when we're young we do such things not because we have to and when we get old its almost a have to. Tj |

If you really need to have one, Slumberjack makes a small, compression pillow. I leave it under the back seat of my truck and pretty much only bother to use it when I happen to camp by it. Doesn't rate a place in my backpack though. When backpacking, I just use my pack for a pillow (minus the hard stuff like stove, pot and water filter.) An empty 2L Platypus bladder with one of those pull tops on it works in a pinch too. Just pull the top, blow it up a bit, close top and you have a half assed pillow.

I take a small commercial knock off of a GI laundry bag that I had to buy at a .mil school years ago when I forgot mine. I simply fill it with whatever clean or dirty laundry I have handy and it works just fine.
I used to carry one of those small backpacking pillows, but this takes up less room. I'd use the stuff sack method, but mine are the slick GI nylon, and I don't sleep well laying my head down on that material. |
