I know this has been covered before, but my search-fu must be weak this AM
The wife-unit and I do quite a bit of traveling on vacations, family trips, etc. 8 out of 10 trips we are in the vehicle, but we still fly 5-6 times per year - with some of these being "out of country" - USVI/BVI primarily. When we are in the vehicle, I am always prepared and usually end up taking more than I always planned too. But, where I am severely lacking is when we fly. Some of your guys that have mastered this and/or do lots of flying for work or leisure, maybe you can shed some light on your BOB/GHB that you carry-on a commercial flight? |

I travel a lot for work, including many trips to the middle east and europe.
I stuff a set of clothes plus a couple extra pairs of boxers and socks in my carry on, along with a small shortwave, extra AAs, flashlight, cell phone charger, and a small clean up kit in a baggie. This is mostly in case I miss a connection and have to spend the night without my check bag. My carry on also contains all the information I'll need when I get to where I'm going (hotel info, flight info, taxi numbers, US Embassy contact info, cheap prepaid phone to keep my international roaming charges down). My check bag has a small tool kit with a gerber, peanut lighter, and a few work related tools and things I'll need when I'm there. This usually includes a small knife but not much depending on laws in that country. |

The most important thing is to wear fireproof clothing, and have a mask and goggles handy. Beyond that, water, food, and a layered clothing system appropriate for the areas you're flying from, to, and above. And a cell phone and flashlight.
Some toiletries like contact case and solution, glasses, medicines, etc, depending on need. Az |

Carry food with you in your carry on. You may get stuck in an airport along with a few thousand of your fellow travelers (think Denver a few years ago). Also, you may get stuck on a tarmac somewhere for an hour or two (used to be 5-6) waiting to take off. I carry granola bars, candy, and some of these shelf stable sandwiches (a little cheaper here)
With idiotic security theater the way it is, you need to either buy liquids once your inside the (in)secure area or carry empty plastic containers in and fill them on the other side. It's a good idea to have both food and water with you when you travel by air. You may also want to have some fresh wipes or similar to freshen up a bit if you're stuck with an unplanned layover. Always carry cash, credit card, and at least one change of undies/socks/shirt so that if your stuff doesn't arrive with you at your destination (or you're stuck in the airport without it) you don't have to keep wearing dirty clothes. |

This has sort of become the "Official" GHB Thread that all others reference. It's up to about 18 pages and was started by a guy who bases all of his gear on his flight carry-on GHB. I've read it a time or two and scanned it countless other times for ideas, tips, and tricks. I kept a word document open the second time i read it in detail and made a saved list of items to include in a bag.

These are some of the things I pack on the plane.
flashlight/headlamp (usually a Surefire G2 LED) food empty Nalgene bottle 16 oz (fill past security) 550 cord tactical pen carabiner, full size Money and coins for each country toothpaste and brush, I can deal with that travel smell, but adding morning mouth is too much. |

Great suggestions so far guys, thanks. That "Cross Country GHB" link is what I have been looking for. I ran across it some time back, but couldn't find it again. Thanks for linking to it.
I am overhauling my bag now and plan to use it the next time I fly, to the BVI in January. |

Just carried all of these things onto a plane this week (or a comparable item). I also tend to bring a emergency whistle, signal mirror, bic lighter, matches, Orikaso folding bowl and cup, and a plastic LightMyFire Spork. |

Perfect timing. I am going to fly next month, it has been 15 years since last time. Only 2hr flight. I doubt I can take my surfire e2d on board, can I? When in doubt, play stupid and say it's just a flashlight. A buddy of mine lost that exact model of flashlight one day going through security. He had flown with it probably 2 dozen times before. So the correct answer is "It depends what day it is"
