I've been going back and forth on what purchases to make, and would like some input and perhaps different insight than the things I have been thinking.

I currently have a size Large Interceptor vest with soft inserts, no hard plates.

I will likely be doing all of my ordering through Bulletproofme.com unless there are some otherwise upstanding recommendations that will sell freely to civilians or CCW holders.

I was thinking of buying 10"x13" Level IV Standalone plates to put into my current vest which would be a worst case scenario vest to be used in a situation such as a widespread "WROL" (LA Riots, Katrina, massive earthquake, etc).  The benefit to this would be that should I choose to move them into a lighter setup such as a Crye JPC, they would still have full protection without the need for any sort of soft backer.  The problem with a Level IV standalone is obviously weight.  With just the vest and plates, no pouches, mags, etc, I am going to be at almost 30lbs, easily 40lbs once molle gear starts getting strapped all over it, and while i'm in good shape and often exercise with a 20lb vest on, I know how much quicker you fatigue and how much slower you move when wearing something that heavy.

Also, as I am trying to determine concealability vs. threat, if I were to feel the need to wear armor in the case of meeting an unknown person for a sale or transaction of some sort, or if there had been threats at work, I am trying to decide on the pros and cons of Level II vs. Level IIIA in a GoldFlex with a full side wrap, no overlap.  The published thickness difference is .9mm, which seems like nothing, but I haven't had to wear concealed armor for any length of time.  Would one be any more or less visible under a polo shirt, or is it going to require wearing a light jacket over the top in an attempt to not scream "THIS GUY IS WEARING ARMOR OMGWTFBBQ!:!>!?!"

I am looking to get a set up like in this article: http://jerkingthetrigger.com/blog/2011/09/07/high-value-armor/

The plates are a great price, and have gotten pretty good reviews.

It would also be nice to have a light weight set up like the:http://www.midwayusa.com/Product/412021/us-palm-molle-defender-series-soft-body-armor-level-iiia-front-and-back-panels-500d-cordura-nylon-multicam for times where soft armor would be a better choice.

Soft armor the goldflex is great. It's the difrence between wearing a bulky coat and a tech fleece.
All though I'd only go 3A for soft as it is not much bulkier for the added benifit.

As for hard armor try the EE Sets show up there from time to time sometimes even with carriers and soft armor (older but functual ) for around or les that a dealer

I use an Eagle Low Viz Carrier, TAP Gamma III+ plates and EASI Kevlar XP panels well under a grand...
Stops everything you stated and thensome, I also have IV in conjunction plates that even included in the price meet your price point.
You can also use "www.Bulletproofme.com" ask for Nick

The TAP Gamma III+ plate can be sourced off E-Bay for around $100 Each... Shop around and don't grab the first one you find.
EASI-CORP sells Level IIIA BALCS cut armor panels for $369 KM2 Kevlar
SKD Tactical sells the Eagle Low Viz carrier for right at $99 IIRC...

I just calculated from what I found immediately and about $603 for a rig similar to what I pictured.
same rig with IV in conjunction plates with just my MOHTF Sweatshirt over it and the Chest Rig on top.

OP, I would personally recomend looking for an Eagle Scalable Plate Carrier. They have 3a armor built into them minus the shoulder straps and cummerbund plus the pockets for whatever plates you decide to run. They are durable, comfy, and low key(can be worn concealed). Just my .02.

I have Lvl4 protection with my plates in.

I also keep some smaller, lighter plates just in case I ever decide I want them vs. the heavier, thicker mediums.

Been posted on here many times, the ears are Peltor COMTAC with a military "Helicopter" M-87 Mic and boom assembly.
Custom Cable, then a Nexus U94 PTT Switch with an adaptable cable assembly.
The Radio is an ICOM F43GS... UHF LMR.

Those Ceradyne plates are nice but they weigh a freaking TON...

Thank you much sir. Comms are one thing I am SEVERELY lacking in and I have no idea where to even start as to finding what I need/want.
And yes, the plates are ridiculously heavy but they have a nice padded layer outside the ceramic material to help protect them from handling damage and are lvl4 with my PC plus they only cost me like $300 for the set.
