just got my first iPhone and I'm browsing apps; I don't really play games, but do want
some of the things I saw on the app store, if they do what I need.

first one is a scanner; claims +30,000 channels, but someone said alot of them are free music.
any one work decent for monitoring local police & fire?

anything else that (esp. maps & nav) would be good to have?

thanks

I also have a compass app.  I want to get a good topo map, but I havent seen one that I thought was worth the moeny yet.   If someone know of a good one please let me know.

The map that comes installed is actually pretty good.

Google Earth has an app.

Get the Flashlight one that lets you turn on the LED flash, pulse it, and do colors and messages on the screen.  It's really useful and sort of fun.

Get a good PDF and book reader. (I use Stanza and "Files Lite") Useful for reference books or your own files.

The cell networks are the first things to go down.  Don't rely on any apps that require a network connection.

There's a good app for topo maps.  I don't recall the name, unfortunately, but I'll try to look later.  I think it was $10, but it covers as much as you want to download data for.

I heart radio and the WABC app and a few others are good for listening to distant AM stations.

If you want a scanner for emergencies, get a scanner.  Cell network isn't reliable.

I've heard there's a mayo clinic diagnostic app, but I haven't tried it myself.
