I stopped at a pawn shop in Anniston, AL to see what they might have. I see some white lumps on the shelf with miitary style print. I look closer and see what looks like a military survival kit. I ask to look at one of them. The contents are listed on the outside of the bag. 19.95 ea. and he had 3 of them. I bought two and opened one on the spot because they were fixing to close and I might want the third one. They include, among other things, a Camillus USGI pocket knife, a Brunton baseplate compass, a magnesium bar, fishing kit, bird snare, snare wire, signal mirror, whistle, snare wire, finger saw, etc.... You can do a google search and find good articles and pictures of it. After I had comfirmed the contents I bought the last one as well.
Three kits for just over $60 with tax. I saw one listed on ebay for over $100 and half a kit for $49. I saw another posting that CTD had them for $100 and $60 ea at one point or another. Heck the Camillus pocket knife alone is worth the $20. Hapy Father's Day to me. jd1 |

Neat to collect, I would sell two on eBay and build a top shelf kit of your own with the profits. Being 10+ years old some of the contents will be less than 100% trustable soon IMO. The fishing kits and water bags were top on my list of failure points. I may do that. Yep, I wasn't planning on using the water bag. A condom could work in place of that. What was the issue with the fishing kit? Thanks, jd1 |
| I had read issues online with the fishing line itself becoming brittle with age and hot/cold storage conditions. I checked a fishing kit I had bought at a local surplus store, the metal tin kind, same as in the USMC kit and sure enough the line had melted/fused together and broke when I tried to unwrap it. The hooks and lures were fine but without line the kit was not the best. Kept the kit and replaced the line. GTG |
