I currently have a Leatherman Wave I have been happy with. Want to add a multi tool to the BOB to keep in there.
Was going to get another wave but was just wondering if there are any recommendations on any others. Many thanks |
| I have used numerous Gerber and Leatherman multi-tools throughout the years. About 2 years ago I purchased a S.O.G. mulit-tool and have never looked back. While leathermans are a great bang for the buck, I personally feel that you cannot beat the fit, finish, and smoothness offered by a SOG. I have abused them to the point even I expected them to fail, but they never quit. I will not use anything other than SOG when it comes to a reliable multi-too. |

I have (and have used) the Leatherman Wave, Skeletool, and the original (retired) leatherman, as well as
the Gerber Suspension and the Victorinox SwissTool. I really don't think you can go wrong with the Wave. Consider the Skeletool if you like simple and low weight (once I got the Skeletool, the wave ends up staying in my EDC bag until I need the file or the itty-bitty screwdriver.) Either blows the original leatherman out of the water. The swisstool has super-sharp blades that stay that way, but it's much harder to use that the Wave, and harder on the hands as well. It's also large and heavy. I'd say it's pretty well built, but a couple of the blades seem pretty thin. It has the same basic feel as the original leatherman. I do like the plier jaws on the Swisstool a bit better (the tips are blunt, so it's not quite the needle-nose of the Wave, but they're very thick and don't twist under torque. This is the same reason I like the Skeletool's plier jaw as well.) I've received several Gerbers as a gifts, it's pretty meh, handles weird and is basically just not usable, though it does have some pretty beefy screwdriver blades to its credit. I regifted most of these to folks who could use a tool in their car or whatever, but don't do the EDC thing. |

My Kershaw has been very good to me. The locking plier has been really useful. Belt loop on the pouch ripped some stitches and I haven't repaired it yet. Started carrying the backup SOG. The SOG geared pliers have held up well and really let me get a grip on stuff. Bad arthritis in my hands, so good pliers are a must. A while back though they seemed to take up residence with my son. Rummaged around in the extras box and pulled out a new Gerber Radius. I think $20 at SMKW over the holidays. These things have surprised me. The plastic handles offer more surface area and are really comfortable. A nice thin needle nose. The phillips blade, rotated out 90 degrees to the handles has let me bust loose some pretty stubborn screws. The little scissors are handy and I've pried open some sliding door hardware with the flat blade that should have required a pry bar. For the money, they're really OK.
