10w30 synthetic, same as goes in my car.  Synthetic I think resists oxidation and such better, so is preferred for long term storage.

Generator specs say either 10w30 or straight 30 weight are ok, 10w30 makes for easier starting in the cold.

Same here. The crankcase holds less than a quart - which means that the extra expense of going with a synthetic is insignificant.

Mobil 1.  Already have cases of it in my garage.  ETA: Ditto for the snowblower and rototiller.

10w 30 synthetic oil in one Coleman 5k (it was always run with synthetic), 10w 30 dinosaur oil, in the other Coleman 5k (it has only had dinosaur oil)

Two stroke oil in the 2 harbor freight 800 watt genny And 10w 30 in the 1200 watt propane Chinese gen.

Changed once or twice every year, unless I use them extensively during power outages.

HIJACK!! Everyone get down!!!

I just got two new EU2000i generators.  What is this break-in procedure that you speak of?

Been doing it this way since 1998

ETA: And I agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly. When you need to use your genset it's usually an emergency, so you need it to be 100% reliable. In that capacity, nothing but the best will do.

I'm not a Honda owner, but EVERY other generator engine I've seen or owned had a recommended break-in procedure - It's essential in getting a long lifespan out of the engine, and in minimizing oil consumption.

Typically, the break-in procedure consists of running the generator at no more than half of max continuous rated load for the first 5 hours or so after it is started for the first time, after which the oil is changed out. However, the actual procedure varies somewhat with brand and model - which is why you really need to find a copy of the EU2000i owner's manual and read Honda's break-in recommendations before running your generators.

I'm using Mobil 1 0w-30 in my 48 kW Generac.  Needless to say, I'm expecting this unit to start when needed, irregardless of the weather.

My generator has to be going on 6000 hrs. Its 5000 watt powermate. with eht subaru engine. I use regular motor oil and 87 octane fuel. It doesnt burn excessive oil , doesnt leak or smoke.  Considering I got it on sale many years ago for $425 bucks Id say she has done well.

I usually put fresh oil in it at the beginning of race season. Then change it midway through the summer and again at the end of the season. Its used almost every weekend may-oct. Friday mid day -sunday afternoon. We have 2 units bolth the same make and model. One even went under water in flood. Neither had any special break in and bolth were run non stop while in use.

I guess I will find out how long they actually live on day but they have been doing duty since late 2006 and are still trucking.

Same here. I love the cold-weather starting ability of Mobile 1, so use it in the generators, snow blower, small tractor...
