I figured this was the best place for this.
Does anyone know where I can pick up a rad detector (that detects both gamma and beta radiation) for under 100 dollars aside from the 60s area yellow ones. Or how hard is it to build one? |

For under $100, the Plessy/Siemens PDRM-82 might be a good prospect.
It was originally issued in the early 1980's to the U.K. military and the "Royal Observer Corps", and is now commonly available on the British surplus market. Unlike the "Victoreen" surplus meters used in the U.S. back in the 1960's, it is a fairly modern design that uses a microprocessor and LCD digital display. When first powered up, it automatically tests itself against a built-in radiation source, and display a "FAIL" indication on the LCD if it isn't working properly. It runs for 400+ hours on 3 ordinary carbon-zinc C cells (or probably twice that long on alkaline cells). Note that this is a high-range survey meter which is designed for use during a major nuclear accident, or in a fallout shelter during a nuclear war. It won't display tiny levels of radiation, but is instead designed to measure moderate to extremely high levels - the kind that could be lethal in just several days or hours of exposure. This model occasionally comes up for sale on ebay, usually in brand-new, unissued condition. The last one I bought on ebay was $65. |

Wow, I must have struck gold at a certain surplus store quite a few years back.. Nabbed a AN/VDR-2 for under a hundred. It has programmable alarms, and keeps track of your dose. http://www.canberra.com/pdf/Products/AN-VDR2-SS-C37055.pdf |
