I am looking to pick up a couple wool blankets to keep on hand.   I tried a search and came up with a thread for good swedish blankets, but I can't find them on that site anymore.  Anyone have a good source that doesn't have crazy prices?  I could use one for my job because I have to sit out in the cold a lot.

Thanks in advance.

I had several issued in the Army but the best I have ever owned is one I picked up in Quito Ecuador.   It is Alpaca and I have had it for 25 years, absolutely the best blanket I own.   It was $12 back then down there but a person can do a search for Alpaca blankets and find them on Amazon or from some small farms and weavers in the USA.

HFT has wool blankets for $6.97
I know what some people are going to say about HFT right after I post this. And I will add that ironically these wool blankets are red.

I like Harbor Freight. Many good and economical products. IMO, stay away from their hand held power tools, but most everything else is GTG IMO. Can't beat the warranty either on their hand tools.

There are some gimmick products I would stay away from, but that is not a HF issue. Just an issue with gimmicky products in general.

I wonder how a factory, even in China, can even buy enough wool thread to make a blanket of this size in 80% wool and sell it for $7. Just raw wool sells for maybe a $1 a pound wholesale. This blanket probably has close to a couple of pounds of wool in it.

What is the going price for USGI wool blankets?

Is this an actual US Wool Blanket or a cheap chinese knockoff?

I got a couple of the harbor freight ones (not red) for $10 each to put in my cars. We used one of them on the last camping trip of the year around the fire. They seem to work.

I don't care for the red color much, but for that price I can over look it. They'll going into the shtf stuff anyways. Not for everyday use

Try Ebay and look for Pendolton or Hudson Bay Blankets.   Some will go cheap if there is a tear or the mfr tag is missing.     Dont go after the real good shape Hudson Bay blankets.  The collectors go after them.

Are you talking about the Isreali blankets or Rothco/Amazon ones? The IDF ones are not close to being thin, they run right bewteen a US one and a German one.

It is and I'm thinking they'll be paper thin. I'll be making a couple calls to see if a local store has any in stock and see for myself before buying.

Edit: Called local stores and they say this a discontinued item and on-line purchase only. I'll buy 6 and see what they look like.

Gotcha.

After 20+ years in the surplus business, one thing that has always been true is that if it has the Rotcho brand name on it, 97% of the time or so it is a crappy knock off. They make a few nice things, but they are the definite exception.

Something a little different than most: I bought some 80/20 blankets from an EMS supply. They were manufactured by Northwestern Woolen Mills here in the USA.  They supposedly mfg for govt. Humanitarian agencies. I bought a dozen, total price was about 20.00 each. I used about half of them for the family's vehicles, I guess I stash the other half.   Northwestern apparently only sells in large quantities, but perhaps could refer you to a retailer.

Order received just now and I had to go back and order 6 more!
I'm not a professional at wool blankets, but in my opinion these are very much worth the $3.87 each. They are stitched on both sides (but not top and bottom edges) and approximately 3/16 inch thick. Each blanket weighs in at 3lbs 2 ounces.

Right now feeling the weight of them I don't think they will have to be sewn together to make a thicker blanket as was mentioned above. They certainly could be if you're in extremely cold weather areas and feel the need.
Now off to the store to get some 'Wool-lite' soap and give them a wash in the washing machine (wool setting) to see how they hold up. Second part of this review on page 2
Pic I just took.

Edit for spelling

Here's that same blanket after going through one wash on wool setting and one dry on delicate very low heat.
It's now fluffed up about two times or more in size.
I'm liking them more and more. Especially at the $3.87 price.
It's hard to believe this is the same single wool blanket as in the first picture!..

FTR I bought two of the IDF wool blankets and they are most certainly not thin or 'cheap'. Thet are probably double bed size. We are using them on the kids beds when needed. Very warm and not as scratchy as some.

ETA: Also just ordered 5 of the HFT blankets, be interested to compare the two. My gut tells me this is going to be a brutal winter, been stocking up on wood, blankets and oil lamps...

I can get US, East German, Polish, Danish, or other surplus blankets at my local store.  Large, heavy weight, high quality, and not that expensive.  Not $8.00 cheap, but not that expensive.

I carry one in my truck all the time, and keep one on the couch.

I used Wool-lite and set the (front load) washer to "Wool" setting and the dryer to delicate very low heat. It's raining here or would have air dried them.
