I'm forming a list for my first BOB and think I have most things covered. The only thing I am having trouble with is what weapons I should choose for packing ammo. I think I want to keep it simple for my first BOB - single pack, 1-3 days, and 1-2 people. My primary weapon will be my AR-15 (.223) with my secondary being my CZ P-01 (9mm). I plan on packing 4 PMAGs and 3 mags for my CZ. My dilemma is whether I should pack ammo for a weapon for the possible 2nd person. Here is a list of possible other weapons they could use (I have others that I don't feel are practical for a bug-out situation but can list them if requested).
Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308 Ruger 10/22 .22LR w/ TB (TB=threaded barrel for my .22 suppressor) S&W M&P 15-22 w/ TB Remington 870 Express Tactical 12ga Sig Mosquito .22LR w/TB Taurus PT1911 .45ACP The Rem700 would be awesome to take but would not be practical because it is so heavy. The 2nd person would probably be my girlfriend so weight is a big consideration. I'm leaning toward the Ruger 10/22 or the S&W. Both are light and both use the suppressor. I think the Ruger would win out because I have better optics on it, its not as bulky as the S&W and it has the same ammo capacity with 30rd banana magazines. I could even pack the Sig Mosquito because it shares the same ammo. So, would my primary and secondary be enough or should I consider carrying another weapon for my girlfriend? If so, what weapon/combo would you choose? |

The 10/22 with a suppressor could come in very handy for some hunting while allowing you to remain very low key. Can your girl comfortably shoot the 1911? If so, I see no reason to not have a pistol for her (I guess the mosquito would be better than nothing... but I would be dammed if I would bring my mosquito over my kimber). She should be able to carry the 1911 with a few mags and the 10/22 with a few mags (as 10/22 30 round mags still are pretty damn light).
Note: I really don't agree with not having at least a pistol on a secondary member of your party. It isn't something that you should be packing for her. It is something that she should know how to use and be carrying herself. The 10/22 I would bring for utility (mainly due to the suppressor and light ammo). I would think that being able to hunt without making much of a sound might be useful in many situations. |

I agree with you guys and probably didn't mention it. My plan was for her to carry the weapon(s) I choose. This was just to plan ahead on what ammo I need to pack in my BOB. Right now I'm only making one BOB and I don't think she'll be making one anytime soon. This will get us by in case of emergency until I can plan out (and can afford) a pack for more days or people. In that case she will inherit this BOB.
She would be comfortable shooting any gun I have. She has shot most of them at the range with me. However, I don't think she could hit the broad side of a barn with the 1911. I hope to pick up a revolver someday so that would be what I would want her to carry but I can't rely on a gun I don't own yet. Right now I'm leaning toward packing .22LR ammo and designating the 10/22 as her primary. I do have a Sig Hammerli Trailside I use for bullseye that she could use. It has a red dot on it but I don't have a holster for it. I also have a Beretta 22 Neos but don't have a holster for it either. I would not trust my life with any of these but would not hesitate shooting any of them. Maybe I should pick up a Ruger Mk.II in the future. |
| With those legs, she should be able to hump a decent pack around. She is built well so load her down. My wife and I are trying our hand at back packing this year so we will see if she can hump her pack for any length of time. Most women are much more sturdy than we give them credit for. I think she will be fine. Yours and mine! |

Heck, maybe I'll buy her a pack and she can haul all the ammo. |

Where in PA are you shooting. it looks familiar. Scotia Range. Just outside of State College. It's a nice range but a lot of college students go there because it's free. Most of them are annoying and don't follow the range rules but not all of them are that way. It's best to go there early on the weekends because most the students are still sleeping and/or hungover. |

Your girl never worked at the white building / rec hall gyms did she? She looks kinda familiar.... Not that I know of. She was a manager for women's basketball here at PSU the last few years and probably worked out in the white building or rec hall occasionally. |

For BOBs, I lean towards what I carry as a daily CCW. In my case I always have my Glock 19 and it would be on my person as opposed to in the bag. My wife carries the Glock 26 so that is what she would have on her or in her bag.
Now, we have a "Go Bag" that I keep on the top shelf of my gun safe. That contains a Glock 17 with a threaded barrel, AAC Evo9 supressor and six loaded 17rd mags with 147-gr Winchester White Box HPs. The bag also contains a Surefire for the Glock, AA 22 conversion kit and 22 ammo, batteries, M-16 mags, tools, spare parts, and manuals. That bag plus an AR-15 carbine and our BOBs is the minimum gear we need and the Glock 17 mags could obviously be used in the G19 or G26 as reloads. The assumption is we would always have the G19 or G26 on us so they are not in our emergency bags. Anyways, just my plans. If we had time and could take more I would take the Ruger 10/22 (with supressor), 870 Shotgun and a variety of ammo, and perhaps a long range gun (AR-10T or Rem 700 PSS) but that depends on just what the crisis was. I could survive quite well with just the AR-15 carbine and Glocks however if I had to. Lots of ways a person can plan, our kit has changed over the years but I am comfortable with the way it is set up for our needs but if I need to make changes I don't cling to the kit that worked yesterday and make the changes that are needed. |

That's another idea I've been tossing around. Separate my weapons from my BOB. I would then need a "Go Bag" (in my case I was thinking just one of those vests that have mag pouches). I could then use my BOB for camping trips and extended car trips and not have to worry about unloading ammo/weapons to cross state lines. If a Bug Out situation does arise, I could grab both the BOB and the mag vest and get out quickly. Thank you for your input. Gives me more to think about. |

I used to belong to a unami (sp) near Allentown. Now I shoot at Guthsville when I get a chance. |
