| As a secondary SHTF platform if you two choices were an Arsenal 106fr or a Colt 6940 which would it be? |
| Depends on what your primary platform is. I'd look for ammo and mag compatibility if they are the same cal.. If you are like me, primary 308, secondary 5.56 there is more freedom to choose. Next to look at is availability of mags and spare parts and how it fits you and what you need it to accomplish. |

I don't think I could skip 5.56 just to have two different calibers. Like you said freedom to choose or just a better chance of survival with two calibers. This would be in a surburban setting. |

whats the primary platform? Arsenal SGL20 in 7.62x39. ah, yes, you did say that.. sorry my $.02 is that if you're preparing for wide scale SHTF, probably the two most common calibers to be found will be 7.62x39 and 5.56x45, with 7.62x51 a close third..If that day ever comes it's not going to be a beauty contest, so really since both rifles you ask about are 5.56, whichever platform you prefer is probably the way to go.. mmmmmaybe a slight edge to the colt in as much as mags will be more common unless we get invaded by the Israelis.. My personal opinion on this, outside the scope of your question though, is that you already have a platform that shoots an intermediate cartridge, and rather than rely on a secondary that also uses an intermediate, I would consider something in a full rifle cartridge, either .308, Mauser, or 7.62x54r. and since you have somewhat of a predisposition for Soviet bloc weaponry, possibly a PSL, Dragunov, or YugoM76 (<––my first choice) |

Really didn't want to go into a full size cartridge due to really due to weight and a past right arm injury. I see what your saying though. I have the AR but really not that familiar with it yet. Biggest fears is Mag interchangability, ammo grades, and from what I saw certain types of grease to be used for lube. Specific things like that may not be around in this situation. I also have the SLR. same ergos, and breakdown procedure as any AK. But reliability with .223 could be equal of the AR |

well there's no doubt that the AK platform would be rugged and reliable, and I think it's less demanding as far as maintenance. I haven't shot a 5.56 AK but I own a saiga in 5.45 with a krebs sight rail on it, which has a really good AR-style rear sight on it and IMO puts the AK sighting system on par with an AR. I also have a saiga in 7.62x39, I think after shooting both that the 5.45 is easier to target over a variety of distances than that 7.62 since it doesn't require as much guesstimation in the elevation department since it shoots flatter, and certainly the same holds true of 5.56.
Think about a Golani rifle if .223 is what's talkin to ya.. |
