I have a knife that is similar to the Ka-Bar knife that the Marines are issued. What is the best way to sharpen it? It came with a tiny whetstone... I am very particular with my kitchen knives, I have Whustof knifes- (100% forged beauties) and I sharpen them with a 2 step knife sharpener. It won't work on my outdoors knife, not that I would use it if it did, because I am sure the edge would not be the same needed for slicing tomatoes... do I need it razor sharp?

Any suggestions or links would be greatly appreciated.

I sharpen all my knives with stropping.

Strop on sandpaper, then finer sandpaper, then rough leather, then smooth leather.

I do not prefer razor sharpness on my field/work knives. I sharpen them till they slice paper easily. Too fine an edge will fold over and dull quicker in my experience.

I use the Spiderco sharpener on all of my knives. Best knife sharpener I have used IMO.

I use a gatco diamond sharpener to set my edge angle and then use the spyderco sharpeners to finish it up before stropping on leather with buffing compound rubbed in.

The gatco by itself is plenty for a working knife. google it if you want to see how it works.

I can recommend this also. Sharpens anything around the house including fishing hooks.

awesome- thanks for the posts. I tried stropping on a piece of leather yesterday and it was a 100% improvement over what I had been doing.

There is a sticky in the knife section of this site and there are forums on the big blade sites just about sharpening stuff.

While I have diamond stones and older wet stones around I pretty much have gone the sandpaper route just because it is so easy to pack a piece of sandpaper around and have something lightweight to sharpen with.

I still need to buy a mouse pad or some foam of similar type since I prefer that sort of edge over using the sandpaper on a piece of glass or block of wood.

I know you are getting answers here and that is all well and good but for lots of reading and ideas that will make you think about different reasons to sharpen different ways the knife forum and knife sites are worth spending some time on because there is so much information posted there.

I used to have a table mounted belt sander and I kind of wish I had kept it just for sharpening knives but it kind of sucks to move a belt sander just as a knife sharpener.

I have a Lansky set but picked up one of these and use it most the time now. My knives don't take a real beating, so that kit works fine for me. You could probably make up your own cheaper, but I had points which knocked it down pretty good.

I'm old school on sharping knives.
I grow up using an small stone.
As well as leather. For many years
I got small as well as KaBar size knives
razer sharp.

Then a few years back I got the Lansky.
Much easier to keeping your edge up! Faster!
Of late I'm forced to use the Ark stone.
Need a new 120 stone for the Lansky!

For you all that use the Sharpmaker, do you use a steel between sharpenings or just use the fine block that comes with the Sharpmaker for blade alignment?
