Well, I don't personally know any BOV specific forums, Expedition Portal may be the closest thing to what you're looking for.  If you aren't familiar with it, it's a forum that specializes in vehicle-based expeditions.  Due to this fact, the guys there set their vehicles up to be self-sufficient and what they may or may not know is that they are actually building pretty capable BOVs at the same time.

That is a very vague statement.

Unless you plan to fab a one off rig, you will need to narrow it down

First, what are your needs (speed, cargo capacity, people capacity,  rough terrain, rock, desert, snow, etc etc)

Second, you need to see your budget, its real easy to build a 20k rig that will do nothing you expect it to.

Thirdly, if you pick a brand (chevy Blazer, ford Pickups, Land rovers, etc etc) than we can steer you in the right direction.

There are sites dedicated to off roading all around like Pirate and IHMUD.com But if you pick a brand like Chevy Blazer, there is Colorado K5 or CK5.com, etc.

Yea thats a good place  (high dollar though). Do a google search for Expedition vehicles, etc, youll probably end up with alot of australian sites and land rover sites as well. Just take what you can from them all.

Ok I have a 97 s10 blazer. I'm mainly looking for cargo space and minor upgrades, tires/suspension. I have already been a member on s10forum.com for 10 years and allt other s10 forums.  Limited budget. and this is also my daily driver so I'm not looking to do anything radical, will probably never be 4 wheeled more than 2-3 times a year.

Expedition portal has some good concepts on keeping a vehicle conservative but capable.  For instance a lot of em avoid the big lifts or major changes that will really change the attitude of a vehicle.  A lot of their stuff is aimed at being driven a lot on road and off road and on crappy roads.

I recomend reading at expedition for ideas like storage or tires or whatever.  The toyota section, landcruiser, has a lot of stuff on vehicle storage and the ideas do somewhat translate to other vehicles.  IH8mud also has a lot of really good stuff on storage but they are mostly a toyota site I think.

You can get ideas of what you want and then search the sites more specific to your vehicle to see how best to accomplish what you are after.

I have a jeep grand cherokee and I don't spend a whole lot of time in the jeep section at expedition portal.  I play in all the sections a little bit.

For my jeep right now I am mostly interested in tires since I need to buy a set soon and storage in the jeep.  The suspension is also wishy washy, I love a one ton leaf spring suspension, so I might get around to messing with some springs soon to stiffen things up and let it control a heavy load better.  I am not real interested in a lift.

There are good sites for my jeep to go learn about some specific products for certain mods but playing around on the portal let me figure out what I am wanting my suspension or storage or tires to accomplish.

Quite frankly your truck is at an age where it is worth most as transportation.  You may have a life change that requires you to get a different vehicle.  Do not invest any money in mods that you may need elsewhere.  This is really important for to remember about suspension mods.  Considering that you say you 4 wheel so little, I think that a lift kit comes in the looks-cool category.  Looks-cool makes everybody look; thieves, vandals, LEO, etc.

Thief––oooh looks-cool maybe I can get something.  Now you hear your $300 window shattering.
Vandal––oooh looks-cool I'mma #### it up.  Paint keyed = $$$$
LEO––oooh looks-cool....watches you for a bit, and you make a minor driving mistake...oh he just changed lanes with no signal.  Ticket $$$

To meet your requests with what you have listed as assets.
>Tires: get some good tires; you can go bigger by trimming the fender or air dam, but going bigger will cost mpg.  BFG AT-KO, BFG MT, and Michelin LTX-AT2 are good tires.
>Cargo get a roof rack and a luggage box or cargo basket.  Thule and Yakima are good brands Sears also has the boxes.
>Other get a 4 pack of the new Nato fuel cans from DO (Order Link, and Review Link), and a Super Siphon; this will double your range.

Michelin LTX-AT with about 80k miles you can see that the tread is still good

Ice chest with a 5 day rating.  The rating tells you how well insulated the chest is––more is better.  This hauls groceries safe from heat and cargo safe from wandering eyes.

Our Suburban with a Sears (really Thule, but sold at Sears) cargo box, and a bike rack.  This is mounted with an rack that I worked up form Home Depot/Lowes hardware.

$1000 for tires
$20 for ice chest, but retail is $80 or less
$60 for the roof box (craigslist) but retail is $250 to $700
$60 for the roof rack but Thule and Yakima are stronger––retail about $200
$30 for the bike rack (craigslist), but retail is $150

So as pictured $1170, or full retail $1730

This is what came stock on my'02 Tacoma. I only replaced them at 96,000 because one had developed a slow leak and I was putting air in that one about every two days. I believe I could have gotten another 10,000 out of them easy, there was that much tread left. The key to tires is rotate, rotate, rotate.

By the way, yes I did replace them with a another set that I now have 37,000 on and they still look good. But I don't off road so that doesn't put as much wear on them either.

First time posting a picture, let's hope I did this right.

Here is my BOB - 1974 Land Rover Lightweight - English Ministry of Defense only version of the Series III Land Rover.

May not be fast but will go anywhere.
