A google search turned up outrageous prices for the Scepter MFC's.
However, I found a couple of Desert Sand (Tan) Scepter MFC's, unissued, never used. $21.99 ea. I googled the NSN and it simply states: Can, Military The strap on the cap is the same color as the rest of the can. They are marked: Scepter Corporation FUEL 20L Warning: For Storage of Fuels Only........ I am wondering about the gasket in the cap, does it make a difference whether I store gas or diesel? They look exactly like these: MFC |

To give you assistance, you must first post a link to your findings This was not a mail order deal.... and I already bought them. But, nice try I was just about to pull the trigger on a couple of the metal Blitz cans for $39.99 ea. and walked into these cans. |

Even though you didn't buy 4 extra to send to me for good Karma, I'll tell you:
Standard rubber gaskets in these are not supposed to be used with gasoline; only diesel (maybe kerosene, too). Viton gaskets are needed for gasoline, and can also be used for the diesel fuel. Scepter won't sell you gaskets. eBay has a few. If you're just storing diesel and the gaskets are in good shape, you should be g2g. |

Quoted: Why are these cans so expensive? I know the design is good and the supply is less than the demand. But they are just plastic jugs that could easily be duplicated and probably cost less than $15 to make. Known military/expedition tested, overbuilt. You can buy $15 plastic jugs at walmart, but it will last one off-road drive, and probably not seal (either standing still or with a spout on it). One of the major stories of you get what you pay for. Lastly, due to carb/EPA/Federal rules, their design was killing baby seals, and they are no longer allowed to be manufactured, so any ripoff design will have the same flaws of the carb compliant cans. I've had a scepter can in my office for 2 months now, and have never smelled any fumes from it. |

But they are just plastic jugs that could easily be duplicated and probably cost less than $15 to make. Depends what you mean by expensive. I paid $21.99 ea. +tax (brand new). I compared that to the cost of a new similar style metal blitz can @ $39.99ea +tax (Norhtern Tool). I considered it a good deal. If you mean the guys on e-bay selling them for 69.99+shipping each (or more), then I agree. I have seen some auction for more than $100.
The reason that they are getting that price is the fact that they are no longer sold to the public (not CARB compliant) and therefore command a premium price. I would not pay that much, no way, no how. ETA: They are still being manufactured for "Military Use Only". They are made in Canada (by Scepter) and if you can drive up there, you can buy some from a retailer. I have seen some posts from people living near Canada who suggested crossing the border, buying them and bringing them back, but I don't remember seeing an AAR on this. Canada is not CARB compliant (yet). |
