I've got a transfer switch with a 30 amp 240v outlet and the matching cable to connect to a generator.  However, the new generator has a 20 amp 240v outlet.

Does anyone know of an adapter to put on the end of the 30amp cable to convert it to 20amp? [Home Depot has one that does the opposite- allows a 30amp gen to connect to a 20amp outlet.]

Alternatively, is there a reason I couldn't just make an adapter with the appropriate plugs and some 4 wire romex?  It seems pretty straightforward, but my electrical knowledge is limited.

Thanks.

I got the new plug at an electrical supply house.  It was cheap , quick and easy.

check RV suppliers like AdventureRV.net for an adapter. Id rather just have the correct plug tho.

Same deal as you, the generator has a female L14-20.  The transfer switch has a male L14-30 and I've got the L14-30 cord.  I just need an adapter to drop the male end of the cord down to L14-20, but I can seem to find one.  It doesn't seem like making an adapter from components would be a big deal.  I just didn't know if there was some reason I shouldn't do that.

You are looking to put 20 amps of current into something rated for 30 amps.  Not a big deal.  If you were trying to do it the other weay around it would/could be an issue.

Take the 30 amp cord and put the 20 amp male end on it and you will be good to go.

That's what I thought, but I just wanted to check.  Thanks.
