Thought I'd share this.  I have a few tools I liberated from a neighbors yard sale that need replacement handles.  A 2 lb sledge, a Council axe - about a 36" one - and what I think is an old BSA hatchet.
Gonna pick up some handles local if I can and clean the tools up, rehandle and put them to some use.

Hatchet looks to be about right for a good camp hatchet - about a 2 3/4 " blade - probably put a 14 - 16" handle in it.

Good score, I've been restoring yardsale axes lately. So far I've got a really nice Plumb double bit, a smaller plumb hatchet, and an older craftsman boys axe. They really don't make axes like they used to, well the Swedes still do.

That's a good how-to guide.  IMHO, step 4 (shaping the shaft for proper fit) cannot be over-emphasized.  Easy does it, try the fit after removing a little wood at a time.  If you look carefully, you will be able to see, on the shaft, where the shaft is binding, and you will know to remove some material.

Please do not do the old " burn the old wood out of the socket" thing. It ruins the temper.
