Looking for a breakdown/foldaway rifle in something other than 22 or 410 slug.

Preferably a 308, 223, 243, something in that range.  Basically a round that could drop medium game from 500yards or closer and is readily available.

Thanks much.

There is a company that will make most any lever action into a breakdown type rifle.

There are also a few TD leverguns on the used market, not sure about new made though.

What about the TC contender or encore?

If you are talking survival, i would go with the TC encore prohunter ( all stainless ). You can choose any caliber out there.

I really like the design of the SU-16. I found one in a local gun store and was ready to buy it until I held it. I've never shot one so I can't comment on the reliability - they seem to be top notch - but it was a LOT of plastic. Felt flimsy. The build-in bipod especially seemed almost gimmicky.

I have owned many KelTecs and am a big fan, especially of e 9mm p11.  Best pocket pistol made imho.  That being said, I've also owned keltec's su16, 16A, 16C and 16D.  I was looking for exactly what you described...a perfect BOB weapon that would compliment my AR.

All bias aside, I do not believe I would rely on the SU16, even though I have seen many reviews and tourture tests that suggest otherwise.  I used the C in a tac rifle match and it performed okay, but it was like riding a moped or having sex with a fat girl...all fun until your friends see you with them...

I can't say the rifle didn't perform, because it did well enough (except for the crappy sights-the ones on the D are better), however, I just didn't feel like I would be safe if that was my BOB gun.

YMMV and many owners swear by them.  I have also owned a Sub2000 in .40 and that was kick ass fun, but again, didn't feel reliable.

IF you must have a small weapon, how about an Saiga AK .308 with a folding stock? I have a 16" and a 22" and they are extremely reliable, lots of parts abound to convert to PG config and they are dropping in price.

If you have the coin and wouldn't be offended by a bolt action, Blaser rifles are awesome.

get a T/C Encore or contender! http://www.tcarms.com/index.php  You can have a .22lr barrel , .30-06 barrel and a 12 gauge or what ever calibers you want they can be found in the accesories section. All from the same gun!! heck they even make muzzle loader barrels and there is aftermarket supply for custom barrels from places like bullberry barrel works http://www.bullberry.com/

I think somone makes a real nice case that holds the stock , action and foregrip along with 3 barrels. Maybe it was custom but If I remember right it looked off the shelf.

Is this the case you were talking about? I don't have any experience with it yet but it's on my list for the next time I buy from Cabelas.

No it was an aluminum hard case ling of like a hard rifle case but triple the width and less then half the length.

Im guessing it was this one or one like it and the man fitted his stocked action , foregrip and multiple barrels into the foam. IT WAS A VERY NICE set up tho. the foam didnt looked hacked tho like a home job.   http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat602007-cat20772_TGP&id=0026824226578a&navCount=2&podId=0026824&parentId=cat20772&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=QZ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20772&hasJS=true

The Kel-Tec is what I was going to suggest.  You really should not have any problem finding one, they are fairly common.  They have proven to be pretty reliable too, more so than I originally expected to see from them.

If you can handle a bit more length and size, the suggestion for the Saiga with a folding stock is excellent.  I have standardized on the Saiga in 7.62x39 as my go-to combat rifle, and have had excellent results with my tests.  When you could get Wolf ammo for about $110per 1000, I took all my magazines to the range (30 at the time) and went through an entire case as fast as I could.  I had to let my son take a few magazines at a couple of points because my finger started to cramp from pulling the trigger as fast as I could so many times, but no jams, no misfires, no failures of any kind.  The barrel and gas tube were FREAKIN HOT, but the gun and ammo worked flawlessly.  If you can live with the extra size as compared to the KelTec, I would absolutely look into a Saiga.

Pic of aformentioned folding stock Saiga 308 16"

" target="_blank">

May not be exactly what you had in mind to start, but fits ALL your criteriam especially being in a caliber that can drop medium game out to 500.

Whats the point of a folder thats stock covers the trigger when folded?

Or is it just an illusion from the pic?
10/22/2009 4:28:38 PM EDT
[#20]
total illusion from a crappy pic from a crappy camera (My cell phone has more pixels, whatever that means...but the point of the folding stock is not to shoot a la` Samolian gang banger, but to allow stealthy travel while armed.  i don't think I'd ever fire this weapon  stock folded, except in extreme emergency.

How about the H&R handy rifle?
You can get multable barrels.  I think you can get up to 30-06.
I used to have a .22 hornet , 20ga combo that came in a sturdy cadora pouch that had enough room for 3 barrels and stock/action.
You can get as many barrels as you want, but only one hi-power rifle caliber per reciever if I'm not mistaken

An underfolder AK would fit the bill too.

An SBR 6.8 would the awesome as well.

I favor the Handi-Rifle combo, that way you have a shotgun and long range capability.
The rifle can be surprisingly accurate by the way.

I like the Encore setup.  Here is mine......

This is set up as a packable deer rifle.  It is in 6.5x284 with a Bullberry full bull barrel.  If I was to set up for a bug-out-gun, I would use a regular profile barrel in .308 with iron sights.

u might try this.
i have a t/contender in 223 and its barrel is by bulberry in 1/7 twist. since i am ass deep in hornady tap.its the old 1 hence the barrel twist is not available in a stock bbl. put the choate survival stock on it. also they sell a pull ring u can pull the upper and lower apart with no tools.. i have cut mine to 12" and added a can connector to it. its now an legal s.b.r. i  use the sure fire can on my work gun.and no papwork to transfer a can interstate.

in the butt stock u can put the following
230Rd's of 223
life boat match tube
small folding knife a small fishing kit.
the whole kit is approx 12+6+14"
i carry it when i am fishing in the west.

i carry mine in a brake down bag with a ton full of stuff in the pockets.:
Randall knife
2-compass's
survival blanket
100 feet of planer board line 200# test and much smaller than para cord and brite orange.
camelbak  bladder rolled up
water purifier
army  brite orange  marker panel used to put on jeeps so not get shot by copter's
6 health bars
salt
small mirror
S&w scandium kit gun in .22.
head lamp littler bitty pretzel uses a 2032 battery  3 taped to stock in zip lock

i am thinking  of a 20 GA. magnum cut down but wt is a killer dont know yet.. 2 barrels seems over kill.
i always have my smith compact 9m.m. anyway and 2 mags but not much good in the woods.
i am always fishing, nothing else so  dont need much fishing gear.

hope this helps
i also never go anywhere someone does not know when i am coming back. most l.e. out west will welcome u to leave contact info.
dont trey this unless u have been doing this a long time. i have

also this is not tactical stuff. i carry a ton in the truck. this is private plane /seperation  from truck stuff. if u ar talking shtf stuff , this isnt it.
