I wanted a self-contained firestarting kit that would make fire under any conditions. I started with an Altiods tin and added:
1. Flint steel and vasilene cotton balls. 2. Lifeboat matches with the scratch surface glued to the inside of the lid. 3. Small disposable lighter and strips of rubber I cut from the edge of a forklift tyre. BY FAR the quickest and most reliable thus far has been the rubber strips. They are the length of the tin and can be used as a match to start multiple burn points in tinder and than just tossed in the pile. They will not go out in high-ish wind and are waterproof. Try it! |

Sounds good; I was going to recommend a couple of small birthday candles (or a tea light if it would fit), but it sounds like the strip of rubber work well. I've used bicycle inner-tubbing and it does work quite well. Only other thing would be a couple pieces of fat wood.

A trick I learned here:
Put a cable tie around the lighter under the button, to preven it being depressed and the butane coming out while in storage. They flick off easily with a finger nail. Also, the trick birthday candles that don't go out fit a altoid tin real well.
