Anyone got a favorite choice for sleeping cots?

I like mine after I set it up.

I got 3 of these from Cabelas, great once they are set up, but take some muscle to get the final end in place.  This varies from cot to cot, so I would recommend you try to assemble it in the store before you buy it.

But once they are set up, they are great, strong, tight as a drum and very solid with few squeeks.  Also the "nightstand" that hangs on the side of the cot is very convenient for smaller items.

After a couple of weeks of sleeping on a standard Army cot, I ordered one of these from Cabela's.  A great cot, easy to set up, easy to break down and nearly the size of a twin bed.

I have a military cot (found the NSN and Googled that to find the best deal I could on a real one).  I like it.  20+ years hasn't made them less of a bitch to set-up though

I throw a Camp Rest on top of mine for extra warmth and comfort.

I actually prefer the cheap wire spring cots.

They break down so easily packed though a hassle to set up. Being low profile, they fit easily in low profile 7x7 tents.  Most of all, they give so almost as comfortable as a bed.

I use to have a time putting them together each time then on a camp OPs gave me a pry bar and now its a snap.

My son liked them so much he used one for a bed for two years when younger.

Once it's set up, the Cabelas army cot is pretty good.

How tall are you?

Some cots are too short if you are over 6' in height, or have a lot of....mass to support.

I get by fine with a standard aluminum framed/stretched canvas rig.  They are not overly expensive and are available everywhere.

That's another thing I like about the spring cots.  They do not have a cross bar at the head and foot.

The ones I have are actually inclined at the head to act as a pillow or neck support.

These are the most comfortable cots I have ever used and even own two other types.  I will say though, set up isn't simply fold out and you can put a small clip up tent up in less time.  On the other hand, I don't even bother with cots for one night or two unless its raining.

At home for company, I simply use an air mattress or two.

I do have a couple of the conventional fold out low profile nylons.  They work OK with a ground pad for comfort, but that big square shape sure takes up a lot of cargo room.

I know that it isnt a cot, but, the inflatable Aero-beds work great. We have used a couple differant ones in the house, and camper over the last 8 years or so.

I spent a year sleeping on a USGI cot in 1998 while deployed to Bosnia. All we had to 'make them nice' was a double layer of 1" open cell egg crate foam with a USGI sleeping pad underneath. That couple layers of extra was more than enough for my 28 year old 180lb body to sleep well that year using an extreme cold sleeping bag for warmth.

The only cots I have ever seen that were sturdy enough to work right and last any length of time are the USGI cots. Those take a 36" crow bar to set up properly due to the tension in the frame. I think that tension in the frame/fabric is the 'secret' to the USGI cot - it doesn't sag much. Sure its firm but it doesn't sag and you can always add some foam padding if you need more cushion.

YMMV

i don't use a cot. my sleeping system uses a clark north american hammock.  this is my tent/fly and cot.  in the fall, winter and spring, i add a closed cell sleeping pad or 2. the pad is unnecessary in the summer.

there is some cheaper ones like that. Or go the spring cot/mini roll away deal 40-50$ at wally mart.
these gonna be used outdoors or indoors?
indoors you could go with those fold up style like teh camp chairs that have the air bed that sits on top or surplus cots.
just some thoughts..

Yes, Sportsmansguide.  Theirs have a lift at the head while the other brands are straight.  Unfortunately it is seasonal on availability.

I learned that you can stand them on end and put one side on. Then just tip it over a little while standing on the other end of the cross piece and pop it into place.

I got a good deal locally on this Slumberjack cot and picked one up to try out. Setup was super easy. I mean SUPER easy. WAY easier than I remember our old issue cots being. Cot itself was suprisingly comfortable. With my Thermarest pad and sleeping bag on it, its downright nice. Going to try this one out for a bit and then decide if its what I want to get more of or not. One of the problems I found, was getting one long enough. This one will hold someone 6'5". Give me 2-3" of extra.
