Lately I have been toying with the idea of putting together a lighter, leaner BOB that would be used
primarily for events where we would leave home, probably never leave the vehicle, and be back home
within 24 hours. This is *not* for TEOTWAWKI, civil unrest, trying to beat the quarantine, etc. Think more along the lines of a temporary evacuation for a cut gas line.

I would like for this to fit in a shoulder bag instead of a backpack. Something like a Maxpedition
MPB, Battlelab E&E, or even a Countycomm Bail-out-bag.

How is this for a start on a 24-hour bag:

  • Radio - shortwave/AM/FM

  • Bible

  • Scanned documents on CDROM and also printed (DL, SS cards, and birth certificates)

  • Maps

  • Toiletry stuff (sample size shampoo, soap, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc)

  • Change of underwear for all (appears to be a morale booster for the womenfolk)

  • Multitool

  • 4" blade general purpose knife

  • Medium FAK

  • Light sticks

  • 1 road flare (when you really, really want a fire)

  • Food (jerky, dried fruit, maybe stable chocolate)

  • 5 8 ounce bottles of water

  • Small survival kit (just a clone of my PSK's - fire, snare, etc)

  • Contractor trash bags x 2

  • Plastic sheeting for disposable temporary tarp

  • Paracord

  • Morale assortment (gum, deck of cards, etc)

  • Interior bag light (photon)

  • AA based flashlight (probably a Streamlight Polypro)

  • CR123 based flashlight - maybe (another Surefire G2)

  • Money (quarters, ones, five, tens, and twenties)

The medium sized FAK is just that - no GSW, no chest seals.

Optics? A monocular maybe?

Very close to what I keep in my GHB / Truck Bag. I do have a pair of Compact Binoculars. I prefer them over a Monocular as they are easier to use and much better.

In addition to those items kept in my bag I also keep alot more items in my truck that I can swap in or out of the bag as needed for a specific situation. But I keep the essentials in the bag in case I had to just grab it and go.

IMHO cash/coins outweigh the cards (which have easy to forget and sometimes short exp dates)

Hmm... TP was on my original list but somehow didn't make it into my post.

Some handiwipes in a ziplock would be good. Hard candy goes in the morale bag.

I will take $100 in cash over the prepaid amex/mc card.

I like shopping in the travel sections of stores.  You can get mini versions of TP, sealed handiwipes, and other such items.  I don't like the handiwipes in the baggie deal, never gone good for me over the long term storage.

ETA: Oh, also, in a place where I would need to provide my own toilet paper, I will also need to provide my own clean-up.  In those cases, I prefer handiwipes.  So, I've got some "pocket paper towels" in one kit (sneezes etc), but use handiwipes head-to-toe for everything.  Just pack double of those.

  • This is a great opportunity for me to check out some new (to me) gear.

Any thoughts on a compact radio? Considering a Grundig M300 or a Kaito KA202L.

I am also thinking about trying something new for the CR123 flashlight. How about an Inova 24/7?

Why a CR123 light? I know, they're brighter per battery (i.e. my 1xCR123 light puts out as many lumens as my 2xAA light), but they suffer in battery life, cost, and availability. Personally, I went with a Fenix L1D for my "small light". 1 AA battery, and 12 to 120 lumens. Not to shabby, if you as me. They also have the new LD10, which I'm looking at really hard.

OTOH, I'm pondering if I wanna keep the two P2D lights that I have. Might go put 'em up in EE.

Because of shelf life. Because I can have a fair degree of confidence that the batteries will have juice even if they were not rotated out
on a regular basis. Of course, I *would never* forget to rotate preparedness stores.

So, I want CR123 for shelf life, and AA for easy to find.

I have one and like it - mostly. I was not pleased with its durability as the clicky switch became a little intermittent after a few
months. I keep it on my workbench in the garage for looking in chambers and barrels. I just don't trust it for emergency use.

    Now for a bag...

Any reason to think that this list won't fit in the original size Countycomm Bail-Out-Bag?

I like the looks of the Battlelab E&E, but having to fold the flap over to access the interior
    might get old quickly.

The amex card (doesn't expire) and the phone card are back ups for cash. Out here in the rural west lots of gas stations close at 10pm but have pay at the pump for that 2am fillup and sometimes a working honest to goodness pay phone. Not so easy buying gas if you gotta wake a feller up to take your greenbacks.

I ask, in all innocence, if there's a reason to avoid the lithium AAs? Would seem to offer the advantages of both

For a CR123 light, check out the Surefire G2 LED's.  I have several, and at $69 each they aren't terribly pricey.

I don't know if there is a reason to avoid them. However, another factor (that I failed to mention)
is that I already have a stash of CR123A because I have to feed a Surefire G2 and A2.

Either way, a Inova 24/7 and Streamlight Propoly Luxeon will be here tomorrow.

They are on my list for eventual evaluation. One trick is finding a quality CR123 based light that
has a setting other than "extra-crispy". That is why I carry a Surefire A2 most of the time - the led
setting doesn't completely blind me if I shine it on a map.

I am hoping the Inova 24/7 will be even better in that regard.

BTW: Great user name, I have Sig 2022 also.

I would like to have an A2 for it's dual capability.  My Sig 2022 is my most accurate 9mm, and is currently my bedside gun with TLR-1 attached for night time visitors.

Get the little $16 Kaito from countycomm. It has a built in light, alarm clock, and so far picks up stuff better than my father's Grundig.

Great choice on the 24/7. Mine is teamed with a Surefire G2 and 4 spare batts in my BOB. It is probably the most versatile light out there now. Everyone I show the unit to buys one.

The ARC AAA is on me at all times while the other two are never far away.
