In my hurricane IKE AAR i listed some of the equipment that i used for the five days without power. One of which was my power inverter set up. It is made up of a readily available battery box, a power inverter, a small piece of PT wood and of course a battery. I used this set up to do a number of tasks. I still had a 5000 watt generator, but the inverter was used at times when a generator was not necessary. For example, charging cell phones, running my pedestal fan( with the draw on the fan i could run it for about eight hours before the low charge alert would sound) i also plan on testing it with my home security system to see how long i can run it off of the set up.
The unit is quiet, and portable making it great for times when you dont want to run the generator and best of all when the battery gets to a low charge a pair of jumper cables hooked up to a running vehicle will charge the battery up quickly.

If you do not mind me asking, what group or type of battery are you using?

Its a 625, 500 cold. You can go bigger to suit your needs. I may break down and build another unit with a larger inverter. I built this one years ago when i lived in North Carolina, it really came in handy during the aftermath of the storm.
