Maintain your gear and change out items with shelf lifes.

I had Skyblazer smoke signals in a backpack since 1995 to 2003. They were kept for the most part in ideal conditions. I just now decided to test them. Smoke 1, fuze popped and burned, but no smoke. Smoke 2, fuze popped and less than 2 seconds of orange smoke.

I am glad I changed them out 5 years ago with new ones and did not leave them in my pack.

+1....Bic lighters do not hold their fuel indefinitely.  It just disappears after a couple of years.(at least mine did)

While product expiration is normal, I find that quality items tend to last longer.
I was rotating thru old stock items yesterday. I had a Pains/Wessex day/night flare/smoke from 1978 I thought its time was more than up, it was the 4th so who cares, the thing worked much better than I expected for its age and unknown storage history.
