Not necessarily a "survival" gear question, but . . .

I've been looking at the Garmin Nuvi 260W, but would like any other suggestions.

I'd like a widescreen, street-name directions ("turn left on Main" instead of "turn left in 50 yards"), updatable. I don't need mp3 capability, movie/picture viewer, bluetooth, etc.

Are there any units that let you select your own route? I'd like to keep price at $300 or below.

Thanks

I think they can be a definite Survival Item in a Bug Out Situation or if you have to travel alot to unfamiliar places. I've been looking at picking up one myself so I'm curious to see what people recommend.

My wife and I love her Garmin Nuvi 350, very accurate and portable also, internal battery lasts ~5 hrs. Standard 12v auto, USB, or ext. 120v adapter all included in the box. We only use maps as backup anymore.

ETA: Best price I was able to find when I got hers for Christmas last year. Garmin GPS

I use a Garmin 660 and I love it, but I don't use the MP3 feature at all.  I recently picked up a nuvi 200W for my finace for $179 at Sam's Club and other than it's lack of Bluetooth (which all of a sudden she decided she wanted) it's a great little unit at that price and has the 4.3" screen and good voice direction.

I have the Garmin Nuvi 750 and love it. Purchased at Sams Club for $299 which is a screaming deal.

I have the Nuvi 260 (non-wide screen), and love it. Had the streetpilot C330 for a couple of years before getting this one. I'll never be without GPS in my truck again. I do consider it to be safety / survival gear.  If my own experiences hadn't convinced me of that, reading some of the accounts of bugging out during Katrina would have.

Did you have to buy any extra stuff to make it mount and work?
Software included?

Thanks, rustee

I too like Garmin.  For less than $200, you can get a Nuvi 200, If you live near Canada or Mexico, those maps are added on the 250+ Nuvi's.  I won't be without an auto GPS again.  They are outstanding tools and may save your tail in a SHTF type evacuation.

It came with all hardware and pre-loaded. When you register it with GArmin you get a free download of a new streets program.

I also just got a Nuvi 750, also at Sam's club. It does allow Multi-route, something only the 700 series allows from Garmin. I would agree with the other posters, I bought one after getting lost going to a picnic and sore it would be the last time. It is great, there are lots of things you can do to extend it, for example, go to POI Factory and you can download all kinds of custom lists of Points of interest. I have added rest stops, stores, etc. that are not in the base list on the device.

Also, I use it for Geo-caching which is another fun hobby to take up :)

There are all kinds of free maps out there too!

We purchased the Garmin 260w(wide) back in March and we really like it. The fact that the unit actually says "Turn right on Smith Street" takes the guess work out of which right or left hand turn to take without having to study the small screen very closely.  If the new voice driven Garmins aren't too pricey, then that would be the best way to go, assuming that you had the budget for it/
