I'm working on my Bug out bag.  Right now, my first aid kit is a REI "hiker" kit, supplemented with some more band-aids and painkillers.  Suggestions for improvement?  FYI, my BOB philosophy is more house fire/flood/earthquake, not so much zombie attack.

couldn't find the packing list for the hiker kit so i can't really comment on what to add, but i will say that all BOB kits should include splinting material.  wire splints are cheap.  SAM splints are lighter and more effective, though with a space penalty.

remember, a BOB is a walkout kit.  if you can't walk, you're in trouble.

[edit:  check that--was searching AMK kits, not REI.  found the hiker--very nice kit, and good price.  should cover most things, but i would add burn gel, a penlight, and a one-hand TQ.  my kit also includes EMT shears, a 4x4" burn dressing, and a trauma dressing.  make sure that there's an anti-diarrheal in the meds, as well as rehydrate in some form.]

Don't know what's in the "REI Hiker" kit. But here are the the *most* used items in my camping FAK.

Anti-diarrhea
anti-fungal
sunburn prevention/relief
aspirin

I can do without bandages, gauze, "medical tape", band-aids, and all of the other garbage in most first aid kits as long as I have a good supply of the above, a bandana, duct tape, and clean drinking water. Infact, that's about all my FAK is.
