| I'm looking at getting a new watch. I decided to save up a get a decent or a nicer watch, instead of another $30 Wally world Timex. I'm looking for one with solar power and the temperature function. The Casio PAW1500-1V looks pretty good, I like the other functions but they are definitely not necessary. Anybody have any experience with this one or have any other suggestions? |

I currently have the Casio Pathfinder PAW 1200-1V. It works great, I have gone in the woods trying to get lost, and the compass has gotten me back to my truck no problem. The barometer works great, but have not had the chance to use the altimeter yet. The watch is fairly big, but it is all preference. It did not bother me. I am selling my PAW 1200-1V if you are interested. Good Luck |

When the time came for a new watch (I was making my Timex Expedition rust) I did quite a bit of research, and settled on a Citizen Eco-Drive. Citizen BM8181-03E I decided to keep it simple. It does just about everything I want without many unneeded extras. The only things I would like it to have are a place where it says the month, the year (a big bonus) and for the hands and numbers to be tritium and not just luminous. One big plus, as far as I am concerned anyway, it that it will take a normal watchband. It also didn't cost hundreds of dollars, like some that others have. |

I swear by the G shocks. I don't break them or wear them out, I just get tired of them and buy another. The current one is a Atomic Solar, it updates with the atomic clock in colorado at night. My only complaint with this one is it has a chrome bezel around the lens. I'll pay more attention next time I order. The soloars feature is great! I buy mine from Watch Zone: www.watchzone.com/cgi-bin/watchzone.filereader?481f3bdc0089bf4e27430a801252064c+EN/catalogs/1 They're a lot cheaper than you'll find elsewhere. ETA: I think my next will be a mudman. Fairly subdued looking, and "mud resistant" |
@ teague, i have an older version of that casio pathfinder. excellent watch all of the functions worked great. thermometer, however, never was spot on, but i was more concerned w/ the compass and barometer. altimeter worked very well. when the batteries finally died, i had to send it back to casio . i went to at least 10 different watch shops and nobody had the right battery.@recorderguy, i also have a g-shock atomic solar (w/ the chrome bezel - lol) and it's been a great watch. it's nice to know your watch will always be spot on, time wise. |
Biggest plus of the EcoDrive is the fact that if you give it occasional sunlight, it'll run forever without a battery. That's what sold me. I have the black stainless Nighthawk. |

Since this is the Survival forum, I'll go with a good auto-wind or manual wind mechanical watch. I'm wearing a Revue-Thommen Airspeed Altimeter 1998 Swiss Alps Challenge Limited Edition, Number 0015/1998 right now. ETA www.countycomm.com sells some cool watches--both mechanical and quartz... |
| I'm currently wearing a S/S solar Pathfinder- works great, but as noted before, the temp will show a little high if you don't take the watch off for a minute or so to let it stabilize from body heat- I like the power saver mode & auto light when you pick it up at night (don't have to push a button). Seems to be a good rugged watch. I fly a biplane & the altimeter is a nice back up- though more desinged for Mtn. climbing for keeping a track of elevations/time. The barometer track might alert you to incoming weather problems.. I love it & selected it for a good everyday/ camping/ SHTF watch.. |
| Good timing I have been looking at a survival wath. I actually found a Seiko self winder at the mall on sale for over half off at 214 I like this option a little better than solar. Just having trouble spending as much on one watch as what I have on my last 7 or so. |
I have several and they eat batteries fast. Ive never got motre than 2yrs from a battery. Not with the original. Not with the "solar." not even with the "10-yr battery" model. I still like them and own several. I have a Timex Ironman on the other hand thats only on it's third battery in 19 years of use. |
I own one... really if I had to do it over again, I wouldn't pay anything over $500,000 for it... Really... even if I was Bill Gates, there is NO way I would own a watch that costs that much! |

If you will be in terrain with a lot of vertical relief, get an altimeter watch. An altimeter is *INSANELY* useful for navigation, especially in poor weather. I use my altimeter for navigation almost every day. I have a High Gear Areal. I highly recommend it. Do NOT get a Nike AGC Ascent. Suunto's are great but big and expensive. Almost any watch with an altimeter will have a barometer and a thermometer. Remember, the watch thermometer is not of much use to you because it is on your wrist. |
. i went to at least 10 different watch shops and nobody had the right battery.
