Im looking for a stove for Hiking and for shtf. Weight is my primary concern. I love mountain house. I just need Hot water. I just want my damn beef stew. Anywho, i have narrowed it down somewhat, leaving only two choices. A jetboil PCS and a MSR pocketrocket. The jetboil is nice because everything fits in it, it boils faster than water should boil, and has the nice neoprene sleeve, meaning as soon as waters hot, dinners done. The MSR is lighter than baseball cap, i have used a friends with success, and frankly, it is cheaper, freeing cash for more other equipment(im equipping on a college budget)

Any other options, please let me know. If you do vote for the MSR, could you suggest an appropriate container for cooking, eating, and, if at all possibly, slipping all of it back into for minimal weight.

Thanks,
Brandon

Forget those butane stoves, you need the fuel cans which you cannot refill.  Alcohol is the way to go IMHO, you can acquire a lot of fuel a lot cheaper than the canned butane.  You can burn rubbing alcohol in a pinch if you need to, though not the best fuel.  I'm using my Trangia stoves I got from sportsmans guide with my Swedish mess kits.  They weigh more than a pepsi can stove, but the durability I think is well worth it.  The mess kits themselves aren't bad and I'm considering just dealing with their weight instead of working with my current hiking setup (which IMHO is a bit to small to get the job done).

I LOVE my Pocket Rocket. I'll agree with everyone else that canister stoves are not the best choice a for long term SHTF scenario. However, the Pocket Rocket is cheap, simple, and reliable (alcohol/can stoves not included in the cheap part). I'm currently using the GSI Soloist with mine and it works well for me. A large fuel canister will fit inside with the bowl.

just a reminder, alcohol stoves are ideal for short trips, other fuels like white gas or butane/or mix are better for longer treks. if you are concerned about weight; the amount of butane you would use ( one canister) is going to weigh more than the required alcohol for a short trip. on the other hand the required alcohol for a longer trip is going to weight more than one canister of butane. The down side to canister stoves is you can't tell how much fuel is left(accrately). as for me I use both a pocket rocket with titan kettle and a vargo ti mug with triaid stove( this stove uses both alcohol and esbit tabs). I have used the swedish surplus stoves in the past but have found it diffulct to use with out the provided mess kit. they are a good stove just a little too bulky. I wanted to find some kind of bag that would hold the kit but gave up.

I use a MSR Whisperlite white gas stove.  A good multi-fuel stove would be best.  Canister stoves will have limit use post-SHTF.

So, i built a can stove tonight out of two large red bull cans i found in the trash at work(my reasonably clean coworkers tossed them before i could stop them, not that many germs can survive a roaring blue flame).

It is not pretty. The holes are too big. I could have sworn that the bit said 3/64. It didnt. Oh well. It works. It never really achieved that jet stage, but it had a strong blue flame that made the can of pop i stole form my coworkers too hot to touch in just a few minutes. All and all, i am calling this a success.

Thanks arfcom.
