Still showing $16.86 for me but shipping in 1-2 months

I ordered 2 more, wm had them at $16.86 again.

Some other recent #10s.

I had a can of the Auguson pancake mix bulge and blow up on my shelf.  No idea how that happens.

IIRC, the culprit is the baking powder in the mixes.  I don't remember why or how, but I recall reading that it happens with a lot of those products.  Also, if you have a can of mix that's even slightly bulged, don't attempt to open it inside: the pressure will blow flour out and you'll be cleaning up for days

Another note: all of the food items at the LDS store are in stock for the first time in quite a while.

You can't beat the shipping costs from them.  I ordered 5 different cases of #10 cans and total shipping was $3 and no tax.

Am I missing something? Seems very expensive and not much of a selection.

You're possibly missing the fact that its SIX #10 cans for the price listed, not ONE can for the price listed.  And as mentioned, their shipping is usually ridiculously minimal, like $4 or something for multiple cases of #10 cans.  Not sure if they actually get really cheap shipping rates as a religious organization, or what the deal is with that

And good people too. I just got 3 cases of red whole wheat berries. I think the shipping was 6 bucks or some such. I wouldn't hump the cases up to my office for 6 bucks.

The local Restaurant Depot is actually cheaper on all of them.  But for the general public, yes LDS is going to be cheapest when getting those shipped.

We've used it a little to get a feel of it and like it. It's not exactly like fresh butter but is a solid fill in.

For spreading it does good. You can make it better by mixing in a tad of oil and chilling in the fridge.

For baking and mixing in sauces it's great.

To saut you definitely need to add oil since this seems to have almost all oil removed. Without added oil it seems to just dry up and stick.

You can also use a shaker and use it to flavor veggies etc.

There are lot's of tips and recipes for it if you search.

We keep a few cans in the stockpile.

Watch some youtube vids on it.  People seem to say it has the consistency of cream cheese but there's also like 4 different ways to mix it so you get different consistency.  Taste impressions range from nearly identical to butter to tasting more like cream cheese.  It seems when cooking and more so baking with it....it's one of those things you'll be damn glad you bought.

Cheesy broccoli soup mix for it's low price (as opposed to its normal price, or its all time low price).  It goes on sale for this price fairly regularly and is the price point that someone should look for when buying normally.  $17.46 for a #10 can of it.

On the peanut butter powder, remember it only has a shelf life of five years unopened. It may last longer than that in reality, but five years is what the can says.

Milk would be a good staple to add to the preps and this stuff shows a 20YR shelf life.  Does anyone have opinions on nonfat dry milk from the LDS store?

Deseret Nonfat Dry Milk

Price doesn't seem too bad for what it is.  12 pack 27oz for $66.

I wonder if mylar and O2 absorbers would prolong?...or is this one of the foods it can be dangerous to use O2 absorbers with?

What is the difference in this and the nonfat dry milk that stores sell where they only last 2 or 3 years?

I'd guess there are already O2 absorbers in the can.  The oils in the PB will eventually turn rancid, but storing it in a cool place should extend the shelf life beyond the listed 5 years.  I've added a couple of cans to my stash, and don't have any long term experience with PB powders packaged this way: this is just what I've come to understand through researching on various forums and blogs.

From what I found it needs to be nonfat to last long term.

From the interwebs:
Powdered milk can go bad, but it takes awhile. Most manufacturers recommend using powdered milk (also known as dried milk) within 18 months, but this is really just a "best by" date. According to the USDA, powdered milk can be stored indefinitely. An unopened package is probably still usable for 2 to 10 years after the printed "best by" date. Some survival stores sell nonfat dry powdered milk labeled with a 25-year shelf life.

But the shelf life does depend on the type of powdered milk. Nonfat powdered milk lasts longer than powdered whole milk or buttermilk, as fat is less stable. As such, nonfat dried milk is preferred for long-term food storage. If you are looking at the label of dried whole milk, you will want to use it up soon after the "best by" date.

I would think that the factory would store it the best way possible. I bet corrupter was right about the oils going bad, that's what is supposed to cause real peanut to go bad. I didn't know about the five years until after buying a couple of cans one time, that's the only reason I made the post. Most things last 20+ years, just don't take anything for granted.

For those thinking about buying from the LDS, keep in mind that prices are cheaper if you go to a food storage center in person.  A few examples (case prices):

White beans - online price: $52.85  store price: $24.00
White flour - online price: $36.05  store price: $27.00
Potato flakes - online price: $46.90  store price: $39.00
Whire rice - online price: $47.90  store price: $31.50

They also carry a few items in their physical stores that are not available online.

Just to caveat this, that is about the standard price. Walmart is also selling for 39.99 right now.

The way they try and trick you is that the breakfast items (specifically the granola and yogurt) are usually under 5 bucks as just a stand alone purchase.

So far Costco has had the absolute best price on Mountain House, but unfortunately they completely sold out and when they get new product in they raise the price

Lately I've had luck with Al's for freeze dried food

You're probably ineligible, or at least that's what I thought after reading the fine print.  My old membership expired a few months ago and was going to re-up, but it looks like one has to have been out of their system for at least six months.
