OK, I have a Warn Power Plant 12 winch (not a cheap winch).  It has been on my truck for about 5 yrs, but has seen little use.  I had to change 2 tires in about 30 min last summer on 100 degree heat and used the air compressor to run my impact.   Well after that, my compressor quit working.  Now about a month ago I had to pull a bud out of the mud (sitting on top of wet grass to be exact) and now the winch has given up.  I don't have 15 min time on the winch.

SO, what would you go back with?  I have installed onboard air, so I am not going back to a combo unit.  Don't have a great taste in my mouth on Warn right now either.  Maybe their plain winches are better, but not at all impressed with the Power Plant.

3/4 ton 4dr Dodge diesel.  Any recommendations would be appreciated.

And how many time did you perform maintenance during the 5 years?

What maintenance??  Owners manual doesn't mention any that I am aware of.

pull the planetary apart clean it and regrease it.  Ray Charles could do it
just remember how it comes apart.  Just did this to an XD9000I.

You were pretty vague about what failed.  Start by checking the solenoid pack.  Terminal corrosion is the number one reason a winch quits working. Even if a connection looks okay, take it apart and wire brush it.   Check that you are running at least 2 gauge cable and that the battery connections are solid.  From there, check the drivetrain.

Warns are solid winches and you may just have a defective unit.  I've own 3 different Warns and I'm really not a fan of the combo winches.  The XD series is solid and has been around a while.  I just acquired  an 8274 and although its only rated to 8000 lbs, it is a real workhorse and a well-tested design.  My buddy uses one on the front of his GM 2500 for expo travel around the US and Mexico without issues.

The female plug where the remote cable plugs in can get corroded over time, especially if you don't use them much. Or solenoids like posted above.

I live in the land of road salt, so I keep the connection packed in silicone grease.
