Cruising around looking at all the new MRE offerings since it's time to buy some new hiking/ camping MREs and came across this.
http://www.amazon.com/Eversafe-MRE-Full-Meal-Heaters/dp/B004WGN1KO?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 Eversafe is/ was Wornick's consumer line. As far as I can tell, they're only sold to civilians by the pallet now and the Eversafe brand was discontinued some time ago. The ones I got were packaged in December 2013 so they're a little aged, but should be fine for a while longer. Purchased from NW Distributors. The company selling them was Wornick's only (as far as I can tell) authorized reseller for the Eversafe brand and I was assured they were stored properly. The company just wants to get rid of them which is why the price is so cheap. ETA - I received my order the other day and opened one of the meals. It was fine and for 40 bucks, quite a bargain. |

They're cheap because they're near end of storage life - I got a case to try two months ago, and 2/3 of the bread had mold starting on it, and some issues with a few of the entrees or sides. All the M&Ms were stale :(
Incredible value in that it came with flameless ration heaters, bit boring in that they're all repacks with basically the same sides, and with a bit of end-of-life spoilage thrown in. Great if you want something to take camping next month, but don't plan on storing them for even a year, IMO. |

Either they were Not stored correctly or they are packed differently than the military ones. Recently ate some real mil MRE's packed in 09 and 2010, no spoilage. Wheat snack bread was its usual dry boring self. Cheese was brownish but still tasty. |

Turns brown after a while, not sure why. Still fine to eat, but it does get discolored a few years after the expiration date |

I purchased six MRE's from the "discount" (soon to expire) sellers online. I don't know what it is about modern MRE's, but 5 out of the 6 were bad.
I'd feel more comfortable eating WW2 canned rations as long as they weren't bloated/swelled, than modern MRE's past expiration. |

I don't think that MREs would be packed differently, but I recently had a similar experience.
I had some FEMA mres packed in 2011 that AFAIK had been stored in room temps. Some of the desserts, cheeses, and breads have gone stale. Just opened a mil MRE I probably bought in 2008 to test, and it was fine- well, as good as MREs get I guess. |
