Just got back from a three day bowhunt with my 15lb pack.
Hike in, find a nice spot to set up camp... At the bottom of my bag is, Tarp, contractor bags, para cord. Had to empty my entire bag on the ground to set up my shelter. |

Makes you rethink how you pack things now huh? Tarp on top helps prevent rain from getting in the pack too! ;) |

Although most of my backpacking is with a hammock, the very top item in my pack is my cuben-fiber rain fly. It’s the first item out and last item in which gets me covered quickly and allows me to pack everything up while dry before packing that fly as the last thing before moving out. I would also say, that fly (basically a quick setup tarp) comes in handy even when needing to wait out a severe thunderstorm or heavy shower.
It’s taken me several years and numerous trips, but my packing strategy evolved getting the items needed first at the top and items needed last at the bottom. I pack everything in reverse…items needed last go in first. If anything, your rain gear and shelter (for me, it’s just my tarp) should be quickly accessible regardless of pack type. What type of pack are you using? Regardless, if 15 pounds was your total weight (base weight?), that's pretty darn good for three days. ROCK6 |
