Last weekend my area experienced some major flooding.
Not around my house or in my Township, but one Town in our county experienced major flooding of a sort not seen here in decades, and some would say that the last major flood of this proportion here was in the 1930s. Almost every road in that Town has been undermined, washed away or compromised in some form. The single rail track running through that Town that services the county coal fired powerplant was compromised to the point that in several places the track hangs out in open air for several feet. They're working on rail repairs pretty steadily but who knows if they'll have the line operational before the plant runs out of coal Farmers fields have been damaged by torrents of water that came off the hills in such concentrated plumes that they bored deep holes in the fields. Crop production will surely be compromised in those areas for the fields Meanwhile in other areas of the county that day there was minor rain that barely affected our shifts or back yard grilling Just shows how a local issue can have bigger consequences for the surrounding areas..... |

Around here the coal deliveries are about every day I believe. Never paid much attention, just like watching it pick up the whole car to dump it. Something else to keep in mind is any emergency services could be a problem with roads being undermined, larger vehicles have more problems when a road is weakened. Lots to consider. I live where I don't have to worry about specific flooding is how I would put it, on top of a hill. But everything I get or have to drive to is a consideration because going downhill is something that water does. We have had a lot of issues with the ditches and drains along roads not being able to keep up the past few years. It has been getting fixed as it happens but now and then you hear an old timer talking about having never seen that before. And the old timer is from the area. |
