A guy at work has a Honda EU 2000i inverter genny for sale.  He bought it new 3 years ago, never used it and let it sit until the gas gummed up the carb,  He said he cleaned out the carb, and now it starts and runs great....UNTIL it gets under load, then it dies out in about 5-10 minutes.  He wants 300 bucks as is....should I go for it and take a chance on something major being wrong?....Any ideas what might be the issue?

You'd get your money back  if  you couldnt fix it and sold it...but yeah if everthing you said is correct then the  motor and head are probably still good

Could be a governor or auto throttle not hooked up correctly after carb clean or the carb wasn't cleaned completely. I'd get the shop manual or a diagram online, tear the carb down, clean it really well, and make sure everything is hooked back up correctly. Piece of cake if you can read a schematic.

Gas cap not venting?

I would give $300 if that's all there is to the story.

If a carb gets gummed up, it can usually be cleaned but sometimes, there is too much gunk in small ports to clean.

Price a new carb.  The old one probably needs to come off and be detail cleaned but it might need a new one.

I'd definitely buy it for that price.

Absolutely not... WAY too much risk involved... better give me his contact info so I can be sure to save him from this wreck of a generator problem he has on his hands...

Sound advice right here.  $300 is a steal for an Eu2000.

I own an eu3000is best damn generator ever.

I'll add to the "BUY" dogpile. A new carburetor can't possibly cost the $600 more a new generator would cost. You could have a dealer repair it and still make out like a bandit.

A new carb for the 2000 is abt $120.

Taking the carb off and cleaning it is a 30 minute job if you haven't done it before and are handy. If you've done it before, it takes maybe 15 minutes.

There are a number of threads here discussing doing it. The carb is a simple one, not like the 4 barrel on your Chevy in your youth.

There's really nothing to cleaning it, remove the jet in the bottom, and the orifice above it, note the arrangement so they can be replaced correctly.

Inspect the bowl for any corrosion, suggesting water was in the fuel, unlikely with modern alcohol containing fuels, or if there was gumming, again unlikely if the ON/OFF selector was turned OFF, blocking any fuel from entering carb beyond what was left in it, that wouldn't contribute enough gum to amount to a hill of beans.

Remove the float, and note arrangement for reassembly...

Spray or apply some solvent [Stabil, it works-seriziously, it's just mineral spirits] and then some carb cleaner or brake cleaner, gently blow thru the passages w/ an air nozzle, if there is signs of excessive gumming in carb, do it twice, and put back together.

HOWEVER, in the OP's case, the fact it runs for 15 minutes tells me that a carb issue is unlikely and that the vent selector on the cap has been left closed and the genny starved for fuel.

OR, the genny may have a bad electronic module that's intermittent under load...

And it will cost $870 to replace it.

Seriozly...

It might just be low on gas...  Mine will start, idle fine and not take a load if it is on vapors.  Now I always fill it before starting it.

I'm in the buy it camp but I like to fix stuff.
