It is my understanding that it is illegal to have a handcuff key concealed on your person.

In the context of the survival forum, I am simply going to escalate to deadly force when someone gets the idea they are going to put handcuffs on me.

Statistics demonstrate the bad guys usually kill their victims after moving them to the back room, another location, tying them up or putting them in a trunk.  Don't get into that bracket.  Having a way out of cuffs just means you are out of the cuffs, but still largely in their control. You should have started shooting long before you need a cuff key. That strategy works against rope, tape, and other stuff as well.

I would not have the key when I need it anyway.

The ONLY place this would be useful is for having a few spare keys around for the cuffs used in sexytime.

Before you waste your money find someone to put you in hand cuffs..... Properly. That means the back of your hands together and the cuffs in the joint of your wrists. And they go on tight.... Very tight! I never realized how hard it is until my brother in law who is a retired ATF put me in some and I tried to get out.

Even tried with him putting the key in my hands with them cuffed in front of me.  Still nearly impossible!

And for reference I am 6' and 170lbs. So not a fat ass with big old arms. I could, with some difficulty, get my arms in front of me when I was cuffed behind my back

ETA: not saying it can't be done. Just saying it is harder then you may think. And that is the way he put them on me. So I made the assumption it is the correct way. I am sure someone will be along shortly to point out anything u said incorrectly.....

I used to sew a cuff key into my belt and stow one inside the belt (money belt).  Only time it ever came in handy was when a special agent (FBI) I was running EMS with thought they'd hold me.  He was wrong, and pretty impressed.

One thing I'll say about the one linked, the part that activates the lock looks a little long.  I'd probably file it down a bit.  I forget if it's Peerless or Jay-Pee but one of the brands takes a really short piece there.  If that piece is too long on the key it won't turn in the hole and release the cuff.

BTW, an easier way to do it is to carry a hair comb in your back pocket then use the thick tooth on each end to slide it between the lock and the arm that swings in place.  No monkeying around with the key-hole required.

And no I'm not moon-lighting as a criminal.  I just decided a long time ago that I'd never do anything to justify having handcuffs on me so I'd fight like hell and then escape if I found myself in them and it was NOT due to LE putting them on me.

Um, not really. Most keys will work on the major brands (Smith and Wesson, Peerless, Hyatt (sp?)).

That said, the poster above who talked about correct cuffing techniques is spot on. And if it's hinge cuffs, you're fucked.

But to be fair, I have a few backup keys similar to those stashed around.

They have been out for a little while. You can get them in paracord bracelet buckles like here.

You will almost always need an accomplice to help you. But in a survival situation (not a valid LE cuffing), that might happen.

Go play on youtube.

Learn various ways you get cuffed and stuffed.  I laugh at movies showing max inmates cuffed and shackled and blackboxed or chains between cuffs and shackles and how people move folks around in movies.

For the guy talking about a comb, search the term "double locked".

Peerless double locks on way.  There is an easy way to undo it using a bit of physics but seen a fella break a bone in his hand doing so.  Youtube had no broken bones.

Smith and wesson double locks a different way.

Research zip ties or quick cuffs as well.

Research hinged cuffs and chain cuffs.  Watch max inmates break em.  Watch shorts from lockup where a fella breaks em anytime he wishes to do so.

Also had broken wrist bones from folks trying to break em.

Find the short from young guns where they talk about small hands and big wrists.  Learn about double and tripple jointed.

Some folks might lose some skin, but they can always come out of cuffs if they wish to do so.

I don't transport in vehicle so I can watch anyone I am moving cuffed.  That is part of the security of cuffs.

What if you are cuffed in the back of a police car?  Gonna jump em when they open the door?  Even tried sitting in the back seat of a cop car for a half hour?  Legs might be asleep.

Gonna break out the window?  Done it?  Break any bones?

Go play on youtube.

I highly recomend buying some real cuffs and learning what works and does not.

This is a bit like someone saying they will take the gun away from someone point it at them.  Take em to a self defense place that practices this and has dummy guns.

Some folks can do it.

Most folks wind up shot.

Anyway.  Youtube.  Learn.

You can make cuff keys from paper clips, most similar wire that is similar size and stiffness.  Combs can assist but not always gonna get out with just a comb.

Can make a cuff key from an asthma inhaler, 3 of em actually.  They won't last long.

A box of 100 paperclips might be more useful.

But I would get some cuffs to mess with.  First do it without being hooked up.

Then hook yourself up or have someone hook you up.

When you think you got it, get hooked up properly and go from there.

Still got zipties, quick cuffs, duct tape, electrical tape, and a million other things like plain ol rope you might get tied up with.

And research that blackbox I mentioned.  Not hard to make it dang hard for someone to access the cuffs if someone feels you are a risk.

But like I said earlier in the thread, youtube.

If in east tn send me a pm and I don't care to meet in a parking lot and hook you up.  Don't know what locals will think but it should be amusing.

I in no way am implying I am capable of getting out of cuffs or know everything.

But in my job the lifetime warranty on cuff keys is not applicable.

$11.40 plus shipping?....a bit much for a plastic key!

You can buy a cheap pair of hand cuffs for a few dollars more, then you get the key and the cuff!

You may not be able to open cuffs on your own wrists, but I bet with a fair amount of work, you could get handcuffs off of someone else when both of you are cuffed.
