I don't have that specific genny. I did put a conversion kit on my Coleman (6500) and used propane quite a few times.
One may be inclined to think that a 20lb propane tank would last as long as a similarly-sized 5 gallon can of gasoline. It DOESN'T. I have NO scientific data, but, I would venture a guess, based on usage, that a bar-b-que tank lasts considerably less than 5 gallons of gasoline. (around 2/3's with the same load) Additionally, (my) propane suffers occasional "hiccups" where the generator shuts down (in single digit temps) because of air, developing in the line or whatever. I have a 100 lb tank for our stove, and love having redundancy available for power as well. Based on the last "event", (Hurricane Sandy) and the shortage of gasoline that occurred rather quickly, I'd opt for a diesel generator if I could own only one gen-set. Your A/O may be different though. The more options you build in, the better. |

Typical propane consumption is 0.25 gallons per hour, for every 1,000 watts the generator is producing (i.e., 1 gallon per hour when the generator is supplying a load of 4 KW).
Or, to put it another way, the generator will consume approx. 1.1 lbs of propane per hour for every 1,000 watts of power produced. A 20 lb propane tank will hold approx. 4.5 gallons. |
