| Looking for some help with learning as much as possible about lightweight tarps. Gonna use them for backups shelters when camping. The net is full of info, but was hoping someone around here had some hands on experience and could share what they've leaned. Please also share any pics you may have as well as any good sources for online purchasing. |

Go with siliconized nylon. It looks very flimsy but its extremely durable. I have an 8x10' from campmor that cost $70 or so. If had it about 10years and it goes on every trip to the woods as a primary or backup shelter. Weighs 14 or 16 oz, I can't recall. Packs down small.
I've seen tacticool color ones at gun shows but they cost around $150. Mine is basic forest green. |

You might check this out. The price is right, and I can say that they are pretty nice, as I have a couple that I use for all kinds of stuff.

I dont have any hands on experience with these particular tarps but am looking closely at these two:

I have a USMC field tarp that I got off eBay that I like. It's not super light but it's more rugged, and has snaps around the perimeter. You can snap more than one together to make a larger shelter. I used it last month on an overnighter. (The ground sheet is a USGI casualty blanket, and the Swiss poncho rolled up in front was there in case bad weather blew in. I wound up not needing it.)
