Whats the best way to syphon gas?

Get two pieces of hose the length you need. One hose must fit fairly snug
inside the other. Plug one end of the smaller hose and insert it into the larger
one. Put them in the tank to the appropriate depth and pull the inner hose
out fairly rapidly. Works every time.

I built a traditional squeeze ball and fuel line unit to start the siphon to power my genset.... that way I can connect to 6gal tanks , not worry about filling a hot generator,  and not have to worry about draining the steel tank when the unit is winterized... I used a 5/16" line but for fuel transfer a 3/8" line would be better.... 1/4" line to the carb fuel inlet

Another vote for the Super Siphon.  Once you've used one, you'll never go back to anything else.  I have the slightly larger version, and I can empty a NATO can of gas into my car in less than a minute with it, and without any spillage or mess at all.  I keep one in all my cars now.

Got one of those not long ago. Very simple and it does work.

A nice silicone hose works better at -30F and colder.

I've been using one of these for eight years and they work perfectly. I store my jerry cans up on the roof of my SUV and the super siphon works crazy well.

I really don't need 'crazy well'.

Okey-dokey is good enuf for me.

How do they work from the ground?

I guess I need you to be more clear.  Are you asking how well a siphon hose--any siphon hose (let alone a Super Siphon)--works filling up a vehicles gas tank, when the supply gas can is on the ground?

...because if that's what you're asking, there's some basic physics that you're not familiar with, and I would be happy to illustrate...Or am I misunderstanding your question?

No fancy tricks here, I use a bit of garden hose and experience keeps me from getting a mouthful of gas.

My only complaint with the super siphone is that the hose loses playability in cold weather. That makes it difficult to properly position the intake in the fuel can. You have to hold it in place.

they work fine, you just have to keep jerking off the hose but it will move the gas.

If you have some gas outside the tank you can fill the hose with it, then plug one end with your thumb and drop the other into the tank.

Then just unplug your thumb after you drop that end below the tank and it should start flowing.

I use these for 5 gallon cans, snowmobiles, ATVs, etc...

I have had my original one for two years and it still works great...  Get several for spares...

I have had one since '92.  I bought it at Sun-n-Fun in Lakeland FL off a guy doing demo's at his booth.  It has had a couple new pieces of hose but the "rattler" still works great.  It has had at least 3k gallons through it.  I used it to fuel my ultralight every time I fueled it with auto gas.  Now, I can transfer fuel from cans to vehicle quicker than any spouts will pour without getting gas or diesel everywhere.

I sell a lot of those here at the marina.  Great for draining water out of covers as well.

This is probably true. If I were to fault anything about a SS, it would be the quality of the hose. I have definitely noticed that once exposed to gasoline, the hose becomes harder and less pliable. I do not leave it in the gasoline, rather I hang it up to dry immediately after use. Not a big deal, but it does indicate to me that the hose part has more of a limited life than I would have thought.

Changed the fuel pump on my car last week.10 gallons of gas went back in the tank in about 5 minutes with the Super syphon. They sell them at my Lowes.

Super Siphon, never looked back.  I have several. Some for water, some for gas. And spares.

Gravity.

A siphon has to end up below where it started. It will lift up and out of a can but has to end up somewhere below where it came from - like from the roof of a truck into the gas tank.

When I bought mine it was a piece of brass with a marble - you had to provide your own tube. I picked mine up from McMaster-Carr. I picked one that was clear and rated for gasoline.

Then it should work OK in the Southern hemisphere?

Like, because that's below the Equator...

Gravity complicates everything up here...

Except I get better gas mileage heading south [downhill]
