So my folks have a cabin in the woods (that I will ultimately inherit or buy out) and is a great BugOut Location.  I already plan to store a cache of ammo there, but if I were to include a few firearms (let's say a shotgun (590A1 or 870) and a 10/22) do I need to do anything (extra oil/grease) to the guns to assure they are "battle ready", assuming they wouldn't be touched in months or years?

Your biggest problem is going to be theft, not rust.

The emitters are good for one year.

PVC Pipe works great for this purpose...  Get a piece big enough for the gun and add screw on clean out caps on one or both ends.  seal the ends with teflon tape when you put your stuff in there...  Oil the gun well and then put it in a silicone type gun wrap.  You can drop some ammo or a mazine in there too...

As for theft, they can only steal what they can find... so be creative where you store this.  It could be buried, it could be in a wall, floor, ceiling, etc etc.  Cheap guns are ideal for this as a last resort.  Some day I should look at some of mine that were put away 10+years ago now...  that is if I had done this

You can so the same thing with ammo boxes and a handgun, mags, and ammo too.  Just ammo boxes will rust and someday fail if outside but would be fine inside of a buillding or structure...

I second the PCV pipe idea.

In my case, I used a 6 inch (in diameter) piece.... Glued one end on, used a slip cap on the other. On the slip end I coated the pipe well with heavy duty [aircraft] grease under the full length of the slip cap. After fully seated, I applied a thick bead of silicon all around the cap's end. this container was buried about 3 feet deep in soil that was subjected to rainfall for close to five years (weapon was liberally coated with LPS-3). This container was dug up when I moved to Arizona and sat in my garage for another three years.

When I finally opened the container, I used an Exacto knife to peel the silicon bead off the pipe and then simply tapped the slip cap off with a heavy rubber mallet. At some point the cap actually popped off on it's own (with a really loud POP! I might add) due to the difference in atmospheric pressure from where (geographically) I had sealed it. The weapon was perfectly preserved.

Oh --- And I did throw 3 or 4 of those large moisture absorber packets inside the pipe prior to sealing as well.

Be careful with the sealant on PVC pipes.  Some wind up being rather corrosive to stored metals.

There was recently a thread where the aluminum handgun was pitted badly due to the silicone caulk or whatever was used to seal up some pvc.  So as mentioned read directions and learn about what you are doing.

If the guns are going to be in a protected environment I think normal lubing will do just fine, complete wipedown to make sure you don't leave any sweat or anything on it would be prudent.

If the temps will swing a whole lot and you won't mess with this stuff much if at all I would go ahead and store them heavily lubed or greased just because condensation might cause some issues over time.

To some extent if you are the type who dismantles the firearm 100% and wipes everything with an oily cloth I think you would be better than someone who just heavily lubes what they can get to while the firearm is assembled.

Some people never dismantle all the little pieces and the dirt in their can cause a bit of corrosion over time if moisture is present.

I personally liked the thread about what can be vacumn packed.  It wound up being easier to name things that could not be vacumn packed.  I recall a glock and magazines vacumn packed and an ar15 vacumn packed.

The thread may have been a spinoff from someone talking about what gun to keep in a shower.

I forget, but I still remember the pics from that thread.
