Getting ready to do a couple buckets of mixed goods, various beans, various pasta and rice. I realized I had a bag of rice that has been sitting in a stock pot in the bottom of our pantry for over a year, probably over a year and a half actually. It is in an unopened plastic bag. I had actually forgot it was there. We bought two ( 20 pound ) bags at the same time and are about 3/4 of the way through the other. We obviously don't use a ton of rice. I kept thinking we had more but it never dawned on me that the other bag got stuck in the pot and had the lid put on it.
I was wondering if it would be ok to break this down into two batches in mylar and add it to my buckets or if I should just use it and buy a fresher bag? Granted it has not been stored air tight, but we have very low humidity here. Looking it over I do not see any bugs or anything to make me think it is bad. While rice is not that expensive, I figured I would check with the hive to see what the thoughts on before doing anything with it. Thanks in advance. |

Should be GTG if you want to place it in the freezer for a few days just to make sure all bugs are killed that would be fine also. I have been making rice a big part of my diet the past few months and found I don't get as hungry as quick and get full faster and lost some weight. There are a lot of good meals you can make with rice many of them you could even make as your own dry MH meal.
Need to try making a few and see how they work need to find a place that sells powdered salsa |

I am sure that bag of rice is fine. That being said, Rice is still pretty cheap. If it was me, I would buy fresh rice to pack and store and use that bag when I finished with the other. just to be sure, I'd put it in the deep freezer for a couple days. that'll kill the bugs. I always freeze rice and beans before I pack them away. better safe than sorry. |

We do not freeze stuff we pack in Mylar with O2 absorbers. |

I just follow the same proceedures they do there. |
