I have been doing some work on my "OH SH*T" plan lately and I would like to come up with a mid range communication system between me and the other guys in my group. I figured the guys that hang out in the survival forum would be the right people to ask.

Working on the assumtion that cell phones wouldn't be an option, I need something that would work from a range of 25 miles, lots of trees, hills, and valleys.

any suggestions?

25 miles over terrain is not going to be possible w/ point to point radios.

Amateur radio using repeaters is what everyone here is going to recommend.

You could theoretically setup your own GMRS repeater(s), but off the top of my head, I think buying 2 meter radios and getting everyone licensed might be simpler

I know absolutely nothing about radios but I am infering that to use the stronger ones you need a license? Again I know nothing about radios but that seems silly to me. I did a google search for 2 meter radio based on your suggestion and this is what I found for a handheld type, in your opinion would this do what I am wanting it to?

It's not the signal strength so much as the network of "repeaters" in place for amateur radio. A repeater is like a big radio that receives and sends out the signal over longer distances, like a cel phone tower. So to talk to someone on the other side of a mountain, you would "hit" the repeater on top of the mountain, and it would broadcast your signal to the other side of the mountain, and vice-versa.

There's a whole forum right here

25 miles over rough terrain, yeah you need a repeater system of some type.  Amateur radio, or GMRS, or business radio system are the options, all require some licensing.

No no-license communications option can come anywhere close to the requirements and range you discuss.

Way too little info...geography is a huge deal, especially if you don't really want to screw around with antennas.

Now, if you have a stable net, and everyone is running some decent yagis properly set up...hell I'd try old CB's. Then again, if everyone is down in a holler, you might need repeaters, serious yagis, etc...or maybe not.

The real secret is: Get out there and try things.
