With all that is going on, and the present shortages in ammo, I decided to do a little spring cleaning of my ammo fort.  I wanted to organize it better and figure out exactly what I have.  Being a hopeless ammo whore, I tend to strike whenever I find any kind of deal, and that has led to chaos and uncertainty as to exactly what is lurking in various dark corners.

The first step was to pull out all the various cans and spread them out on the floor, cracking all the lids to see what was inside.  Most of the cans were labeled, but repurposing the cans over time meant that accuracy of the labels was not a given.  Not too many surprises when all the cans were opened, but found a can with 900 rounds of .40cal for the G22 that I no longer have.  They will be going to a good friend who was caught a little short by events, and I will make a small profit (No, I'm not going to bone him on the price, but I will take a profit as it would be Un-American not to.).

The next step was to count, sort, and then repack everything.  This way I knew exactly what I had and where.  New gel packs were put in each can to keep everything dry.  I now knew exactly what and how much of everything I had.  The next step was to figure out a way to label the cans that could be read quickly without having to dig around.  For this I stole an idea from another AFRCOM member.

The next step was to pick up several colors of spray paint and color code the opening tabs of the ammo cans.  White for .45ACP, Red for 5.56, Black  for 12Ga, etc... you get the idea.  That way you could tell what was in the can at a glance.  Further details were stenciled on the tab in Yellow.  For instance the .45ACP was marked either "range" or "Def" (for defense), the 12Ga was marked "00", "0000", or "slug".  So now when you look at the stack of cans, you can see instantly what caliber and type of ammo is in the cans.

All in all, a good way to spend a cold and cloudy day.  It is also good to know just what I have on hand for training etc...  I will post Pics if someone will IM me a tutorial on how to do it.  I am not the most computer savvy cat out there.

What I did with my ammo cans, is when I fill with ammo I use the label from the box of ammo put 1 on the top, front latch, and both sides then apply shipping tape. Alot easier that way. You know what bullet weight, style, mfg. I would need more than a day to do a check like you did...but it is a good way to spend a cold, cloudy day.

color code and details? hmm, i just label it once and be done with it. whatever works though. I did some spring cleaning and filled up two truck beds full for goodwill and the dumpster. It feels really good to get that stuff cleaned out.
