Let’s talk about the doomsday prepper interactive test on the nat geo website. Take the testGive it a look. It is a fun tool. It takes just a few minutes to answer the questions and it gives you your updated score as you are entering your answers. The scoring system is just like on the show. Even though it may have little value for evaluating your preps, IMO I think it could be a good motivational tool. Also it maybe something you could show to people whom you are trying to convert to prepping.

The test doesn’t really give you very many points for having guns. Even if you max out on guns and ammo that only gives you 5 points of the total possible score of 100. This could be good for guys who have the attitude that as long as they have tons of guns and ammo they are ready for anything.

ETA: was embarrassed to post that my score was only 20, but oh well I haven't even started to prep yet.

One thing I think is wrong is that the ability to "canning" food is worth 2 points, but the ability to "jarring" foods is worth 4. When you "can" your own food at home are you not putting it in a jar ? Maybe they meant boiling canning vs pressure canning. idk

Says a score of 64. I agree. Water really helped me out. Water tower is on the corner of my property. If SHTF I'll be turning that shit off! Sorry if you live near me! Better have some barter items if you want your water. Bug out location has renewable sources for water and it's own gas well. Need more food though

4-8 months. They seem to be thinking you won't be able to leave your own property at all to get more supplies. That would have to be a pretty extreme scenario, like nuclear warfare. Storing more than a couple of months worth of food is a low priority for me.

16-20 months

need additional electricy generation..

don't NEED electricity but it helps,,would need big gasoline sources..

maybe a whole house propane generator like my Doc installed at $6Knever be able to afford that..
or a whole house solar unit for $35K

Due to armed groups, the Bosnian blog suggested that mobility was limited to (helluva risky) travel at night--limiting overall travel to an absolute minimum.

I would count that as survivalist training and check off that box. Also you should check off the swat training box too. Yes I know military in not exactly "swat" but it is better then what an average person has.

43 - i ned lots more food and i have no generator, but i do have several large propane tanks and lots of wood.

probably could use more water as well though i have several springs and sources on my land + filtration ability.

4 months eh...i think i last longer as i know how to hunt and trap + i have LOTS of livestock (chickens, cows, goats, etc).

not perfect, but interesting none the less.

That should give you 10 points if you have a way to filter it. Make sure you have the slider at less then .2 miles for your distance to water, otherwise it doesn't give you credit for it.

I got a 76 overall, might be more accurate as a 73-74 if I actually count out food, the /lb of meat kind of threw me.

I got 20 on the water.

I maxed out stored water (3,000 gallon tank), have a pond, and a canal (which I called a river) I put .1 miles for distance because the pond is on my property.  And I said I have a means to purify, because I do.  That got me 20pts without even asking about the pool.

Also, I lost points for the climate, hot is apparently bad.  Made up for it in year round gardening I think though.

I guess being an EMT is worth a decent amount, as is extra .22?

Maxed out firearms, but only got a 13 overall in security because I guess I don't have enough people.  Wasn't sure if I was supposed to count friends, so I didn't.

Oddly enough, the big long question about being medically trained didn't get me any extra points, but GRMS was worth 3 points??

Of course your IP's are tracked as a normal practice. Pretty much any company with a significant online presence and resources will compile and organize information gleaned from their visitors, either to use themselves for marketing purposes or to resell. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

I have a well, a pond, a chlorine-only swimming pool, and a lake within 1000 ft., but I still store some water (quite few cases of bottled water, plus six 55-gal barrels).  We've relied on the stored stuff quite a few times for "mini-emergencies"... short-term power outages when it wasn't worth dragging out the genny to run the well pump, a couple of times when our pumphouse has frozen up (yeah I know, there's a better fix for that...), or when I've got the water shut off to the house to work on some plumbing.  Being able to ride out the little things comfortably is, to me anyway, one of the more useful benefits of the bigger "being prepared" picture.

This.  ^^^^

First off, think of this from a "percentile of the preparedness community" viewpoint.  If you're miffed because your score is low, remember that there are guys in their 60's and higher who have been doing this for a L  O  N  G time.  Your water source may be less than 100 yards away, but that ain't shit compared to that guy with a (hidden/buried) 6000 gallon water tank.  Also, you may INTENTIONALLY score weak in an area due to your strategy.  If you're an apartment dweller, there's no way you're going to be able to store a ton of anything.  So your strategy may be different than gramps at Fort Lottawawa.  BUT, in comparison to him, it is empirically still a low score.

I'm biased though...  Save oxygen, there is no other more important resource than water.  I would expect the weighting to be EXTREMELY high on this (and any) test.  WCS: If environmental conditions render the outside water undrinkable (filter no worky well for radioactive material) OR environmental conditions mean you cannot go outside for a while (solar or man-made radiation, rabid-zombie-weasels or the angry mob with torches/pitchforks/foul language, etc.) you'll be totally reliant on your internal supply.  Next to fire preps, I think potable water is the most underestimated prep.  We always think we have enough, but most don't.

After this test, I do have to face a hard fact.  Staring at LCI cans full o' water makes one feel goooood.  But when I look at the fact that the average person uses (wastes) 120 gallons a day in peacetime, reducing that number by 75% for SHTF is still pretty daunting.  Though I'm FAR better than the majority of my urban dwelling peers, in the grand scheme of things, I have a shot glass o' water. I've been too arrogant about certain aspects of my preps.

Now, if you are that dude with the buried 6000 gallon tank AND your two sources?  The test is B.S.  then.  Carry on!

Agreed.
I only have a couple gallons stored per person... But I have a deep well and gen-set to power that for a while... I have a creek/ stream just north of me, another one just east , and a very large river less then 1/2 mile away.

If I ever get to close on the sale of my current house and move to the new one, I will have 2 large streams running through the property...

The test is B.S.  then.  Carry on!

I've got a 3,000 gallon tank, but its above ground.  A pond and pool on the property, and a canal across the street (called that a river, didn;t have a canal option).  Does that count?  Seriously though, water is the one prep I feel like I am ahead of the game on.  I bet I am still no where near as prepared as most on the forum though.

One problem with a well, at least a deep well, you only have much water as your capacity to pump.  For us, that means stored gas for the generator.  So, it takes gas to fill my storage tank if the power is out, but then again, thats what the pond and the pool are for as additional layers of redundancy.

Speaking of gas, just pulled a bunch of empty cans out and filled them up today, I think I filled 30 gallons or so, HOLY HELL GAS GOT EXPENSIVE!  3.92/gallon??????   WTF happened?  I had a full dollar off due to gas rewards at Safeway/Vons, but still, didn't expect to pay almost $3/gallon AFTER a dollar off discount...

If anyone is interested, Vons/Safeway is running a promo this weekend that for every $50 you spend, you get an EXTRA 20c/off per gallon. easy to stack up the discounts with that, spend $100, you get 50c off/gallon.

Wow, I kind of went all over the place on this post didn't I????  Welcome to my brain people, it's confusing in here...

HAHAHA!

And you all answered the questions?

You know guys, the folks who depend on you for their safety in the future should be asking what happened to any common sense they thought you had.

And take you behind the woodshed and kick the shit out of you...

Then move and change your names.

This has got to be the biggest collective SF boondoggle by falling into the hands of the very people who belittle, marginalize and demonize, folks who think for themselves and try to prepare for their future.

Absolutely unbelievable!

What a bunch of FLAT SCREEN ADDICTED SUCKERS!

A lot of you need to do a whole lotta soul searching whether your priorities are puffing your egos hoping to get a good 'grade'    from the very folks who would deny your 2nd amendment rights and steal your guns, ----------------or protecting your families.
