I'm sure this has been touched on before, but is whisky or other strong alcohol part of your SHTF plan.   My mom just experienced a real bad tooth issue and I was wondering.  If for a period of time things went south and a family member needed a tooth removed or some kind of medical aid where pain was in the equation or sedation, is alcohol something that works.

It seems like the obvious answer is yes but I've never put it to the test except when I broke and tore my ankle up and waited until next day to go to the emergency room.  Liquor helped.

Its a very common topic.
In short yes, its been recommended for everything from emergency antiseptic to water purification, and even as barter items.

Makes sense and have read that.  Along with cigs.

I'm just curious as a legit pain reliever or good sedation.  I mean I have been plenty drunk but never said "I wonder if I could pull a molar out" drunk

I rotate through a case of Seagrams 7. Figure it will be good for barter and it lasts better then tobacco.

Timely that you brought this up. I had to pull one of my own teeth this morning with pliers and was just wondering if vodka might help, not as much for the pain but for infection prevention (using the vodka for swishing).

Ive read studies that up to 25% of  people with some types of chronic pain use alcohol as a pain releiver.
I havent read anything that attests to its effectiveness.
In theory it works the same as a narcotic pain releiver by depressing the CNS. In practice, your going to need a greater volume to keep the pain away.
I think one could say that without having to get intoxicated, alcohol COULD help to take the edge off of pain.

Of course long term use of such practices are a recipe for disaster for several reasons.

Another thing to consider is that alcohol will thin you blood and has a detrimentl effect on coagulatin unlike opiates/narcotics

While illegal (Federal Government don't you know) to make ETOH (beer and wine are different up to a certain amount for home consumption), it is not illegal to either purchase or have the equipment (go figure).  Hyphathically speaking only , if you 'run' a 25 liter batch of 'wash' which is approximately 12 - 15% ETOH, you will get approximately 2+ liters of (about) 180 - 190 proof (90+%) pure spirits.
Good for:  medical purposes, trade/barter, long term storage or sippin'.  At 90% pure, cut in half to 40 - 45% (about what you purchase out of the stores).
Cost:  15# white sugar and yeast (bakers yeast will work) but you can legally purchase speciality 'turbo' yeasts for about $ 4.00 +/- per packet (try www. brewhaws.com as a starting point).
Basic setup:  about $400.00 (you can make your own if you are creative) for a reflux still (as opposed to a 'pot' still).
A great hobby for the family .

Might help, but then again, you might have pulled the wrong tooth.

I've been falling down drunk and I don't think I would have felt less pain.

But I can't really remember...

I know that I can tap my forehead to see how alchyhol is afflecting me and it does get numb.

Enoght for pulling a tooth, I don't think so.

If someone told me that a molar was coming out regardless, and I could do it sober with no medicine or drunk as a skunk, I don't even think I'd have to think about that one. Fill me up, Scotty...

Alcohol has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. When there is no other option it often suffices.

Only if I pulled it AFTER I started drinking!

I have a 55 gallon still, that I can put to use if need be. In most states you can get an ethanol permit that allows you to produce and posses ethanol for industrial use. You can run your cars, lawn mower, pretty much any carb run motor on the stuff. Some legal restrictions apply. Producing high test fire water has huge amounts of value from medical , to industrial , to consumption.

You can produce it with something as simple as a pressure cooker , the only question becomes how much fuel dose it take to make and how much return will it bring.

My grandfather had dental issues. When a tooth got to hurting he would go sit in the car with a bottle of whiskey and a pair of pliers and pull the tooth. He pulled all his own teeth that way.
