| I've heard that white rice will last for 10 years or more if stored properly. What about brown rice? |

About five years ago, I bought 15 pounds of brown rice in a burlap sack with a thin plastic inner liner. Never got around to using the rice until last year when I used it in a recipe. Rice was stored in a pantry at room temperature and not exposed to sunlight.
Rice tasted fine without any evidence of bitterness or rancid flavor. Most of the problem with long term food storage is the environment in which the food is stored. |

We're on 2 years with brown rice with no issues. This was kept in the original bags with NO mylar, O2 absorbers, etc...
We've used it in numerous "people" recipies as well as small portions for the "dags" in conjunction with raw meat(s). I really like rice for empty calories and rib-sticking fillers. |

I've kept brown for 2-3 years, and it was fine. It was just in a plastic container I bought it in from Sams.
I've had white rice last 6 years just in a plastic container. I would bet that white rice has a near indefinite shelf life at if stored in a cool, dry place sealed in Mylar with O2 absorbers. This site (U of Utah says up to 30 years) and it was still good (white). http://extension.usu.edu/foodstorage/htm/white-rice |
