I was diagnosed with the Flu yesterday after a throat swab. I was inoculated for the Flu two months ago. The doctor at the minute clinic gave me Tamiflu and I am hydrating and resting.

Several questions, should I take penecilin just to kill all the random bacteria taxing my immune system? Should I get more Tamiflu for the next time? The box tamiflu came with stated that you could take Tamiflu to prevent catching the flu.

Also it is really handy to have enough sick leave were taking a weak off work doesn't mean anything and a healthy supply of tylenol 3 is a really good thing.

I think with most strains, provided you are in good shape and healthy your best bet is just lots of rest and lots of broths and clear liquids.

Overuse of penicillin just makes tougher bugs to fight off next time.

Fighting off this stuff is tough on the body, you just need lots of down to make sure it can use as much energy as it needs to finish the job.

Make some elderberry tinture and start taking it at the first sign of symtoms.

Best bet is prevention.  Take Vit D in winter, sunshine in summer.

Take lots of ibuprofen, stay hydrated and rest. Take a good steamy hot shower or bath to loosen up your chest and sinuses.   Penicillin won't do anything at all.

Don't start mixing antibiotics with other prescription meds, just take what the doctor orders.

Stay hydrated, rest, try to sleep through as much of it as you can. Nyquil / dayquil, other OTCs to deal with the symptoms. You had flu vaccine and that can moderate the effects.

Flu sucks. Good luck with it.

The flu is running rampant here.  I've taken a shot for perhaps the last 20 years and have only mildly gotten the flu, not like the misery I recall from my youth.  the antibiotics will do nothing.  Drinks lots of fluids, drink some more fluids and then drink some more.  Stay home.

I'm currently recovering from the flu.  Takes it's toll on older folks, let me tell you.  I, also, had the flu shot.  Apparently the strain running rampant wasn't one of the ones they "expert" guessed would be around and thus prepared this years vacine for.  It's a crap shoot every year, sometimes they guess right, sometimes wrong.

As to the antibiotics, no, don't take them unless they are prescribed by your treating physician.  As mentioned, over using antibiotics can make them less effective over time.  Since you are under the care of a physician, the best thing to do is follow his/her instructions.  Which for the most part is what you're doing, rest and keep yourself hydrated.

Hope you feel better soon, this bug is a nasty one.

The flu is a virus. The antibiotics will do nothing to treat it. If you degrade, and are looking at a pneumonia that's a different story.

To add to the above, taking antibiotics will increase your chance of wiping out GI flora that help keep you regular.  You probably don't need diarrhea on top of the flu when you are trying to stay hydrated.

A buddy of mine at work had the flu. Urgent care said most everyone with the flu strain he had ends up with infections. They subscribed  a "c-pac"? antibiotic to stop any infection.

Antibiotics also mess with the good bacteria living in your gut and other parts of your body.  You are much more likely to suffer complications from antibiotics killing what belongs there.

You are what you eat.  Feed your immune system, get lots of fluids, and let nature take its course.

Unless you get pneumonia. Then you don't really have a choice.

A nasty intestinal virus has run a course in my family. Felt real bad all of a sudden, then was back in operation after a full day in bed. I hope I do not get the "flu".

It's possable he meant "everyone" showing up at the urgent care place.  I've had the flu 2-3 times- never fealt the need to go to the doctor.  If I ever do to the doctor for the flu, I'd probally need a resperatory care, fluids, and/or antibiotics.

The Dr  (or PA/NP) may have been an idiot, or he may have just been slighly stretching things.  But most people I know don't go to the doctor if they think it's cold or a flu.

My ER is bursting with patients coming in with the Flu.  Doesn't anybody pay attention to the public service commercials?  The Flu is a VIRUS, there is nothing that can be done that your immune system is not already doing.  The treatment is simple, stay at home in order to rest and limit exposing others.  Hydrate.  Treat the symptoms, as in for fever and aches use Motrin or Tylenol.  Again, rest and hydrate.

Antibiotics will do nothing for the Flu.  If one has picked up a little pneumonia or bronchitis to go along with their Flu, then antibiotics may be helpful.  But for Flu on it's own, antibiotics will do nothing.  Tamiflu is recommended within the first 48 hours of onset.  After 48 hours of symptoms Tamiflu shows little effect on the severity or duration of symptoms.

For the elderly, the very young, and those with preexisting health issues (respiratory issues in particular) the rules are different.  They may need support from the medical system such as IV hydration, or respiratory support.

YMMV, but this is what I've come away with in 12 years in the trenches.....

Sometimes my paranoia kicks in and I think the government is testing biological agents (flu virus in particular) on the general public and also, at the same time, testing for a cure.

My family just recovered from getting sick.  Not the flu (knock on wood) but the cold.  I feel i'm pretty good with infection control.  I work in the dental field and wear mask, gloves, and wash hands prior to each patient and yet, I believe, I was the one who brought it home.  It's a wake up call to myself on how easy it is to spread sickness and that I have to do better in practicing infection control.

Or if you don't want to make your own buy some, it's named Sambucus.  Available at Amazon, or maybe your pharmacy. I saw some in a Rite-Aid in VA the other week.

Wife and I have both been sick with it since Christmas Eve. Both of us feel like warmed over shit. Seem to get better and then gets worse, 1 day feel pretty good, the next can't hardly get out of bed.

Ugh, can't wait for it to be over. We were both innoculated in late Oct early Nov and it didn't make a difference. My brother's girlfriend got sick around the same time and she is still in the same condition as us.

Just got over a nasty virus that ended up becoming a sinus infection and bronchitis, for which I did take antibiotics.  It wasn't the flu, but sucked just as bad.  Airborne usually works wonders for me if I take it right when I start to feel sick.  But as others have stated antibiotics won't help the flu.  You do want to monitor it though in case it turns into a bacterial infection and at that point antibiotics will help

I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is yes, that's the way this one is going this season and why we're in an epidemic.  This one keeps coming back for more.  Our household due to our vocations, well, bluntly if there's a killer pandemic, you all send flowers from your bunkers because the Tj family will be dead.  This Flu season we got hit with our first dose BEFORE I could get a Flu shot.

A very active immune system, it was a real PIA.  It had me in bed for two days, still a strong URI (upper respiratory infection) for 11 and had to do antibiotics to kill the secondary bacterial.

Now here's the bad news, 10 days of I feel fine then bang here it came again.  Though not pleasant by any means, second time was more like a normal Flu pattern without any real bed time, just miserable all the time.

Now this was all back when schools started.  Last week we go have dinner with my nephew and his family and "The Bug" my little four year old niece in the worst germ factories known to man "Daycare" sprays us all with germs.  I'm talking one of those explosion type things.  You would have had to take a bath in hand sanitizer to fight that one off and we are at a restaurant.  Can you say, "I'm doomed?"

The good news is 3rd exposure, my son and I both just got the sniffles for two days and fought it off.  My 9 month old niece (Puddin) was not so lucky.  The baby had to be rushed to the doctor and needs breathing treatments as its her first go around, probably period.  I will note due to the timing, I seriously suspect the babies exposure was that night too, meaning the DayCare does a pretty good job of child/germ isolation at least from infants and toddlers.

This low impact on immune system resistance of this one is bad this year and why we are in an epidemic.  It comes back so more people are sharing it with more people.  I've even been reading and hearing a lot of reports about its defeating flu vaccinations timing dependent, of course.  What I'ms saying here is people with flu shots for that exact strain are still catching it.

This is a bigger deal than what people think.  Just by the shear numbers, a lot of folks are going to die from this one.

It's been pretty bad up here.

Lots of people in the ER and hospital.

Also whooping cough is still around.

My boy got hit hard but he also had bad strep and had to spend 2.5 days in the hospital.

Rest of us only had low fevers that went on for a week or so.

My son went thorugh it some time ago, nasty. Dont take antibiotics just becuase. You're already taking Tamiflu.
Stay well rested, and maybe the best adivce, drink water until its pouring out of your eyes!
A nice tea with lemon two or three times a day, then more water.
Good luck!

I am finishing up a week with the norovirus, convinced that is what it was after reading about it and contrasting the flu info.
TJ I couldn't agree more on the day care/preschool breeding ground theory. After our sons grew up and moved out my wife and I noted a distinct difference in the crud we got. Due to all the usual reasons my #2son is back home, and he has full custody of our 4 year old granddaughter, (the light of my life).
Granddaughter goes to infectious disease breeding ground (pre-school) and brings home every bug known to man, passes it around, takes about a month to move through the family and they we are ready for the next one.
The pre-school teacher is beside herself, she fumigates the place every evening but kids...well...they are indeed kids.
Being winter, it is cold cold around here most days so the place is locked up, windows closed and heat going. That doesn't help either.
I am becoming one anal Grandpa about hand washing and such.
If I could get Lysol in a garden sprayer I'd be after it.

This is what happened to me in December, all month.  I would get to feeling better, start getting things done, and be down for the count for three days.

I have told people to take it really easy for two weeks.  You may feel fine, but you aren't done yet and should really restrict your activity.  I was pretty miserable.

Yes, I had the shot.

Buy some cinnamon and local honey (store honey sucks).  Put a tablespoon of honey and a couple shakes of cinnamon in yer up.  Pour in hot water.  Drink this 2-3 times daily.  Makes me feel better.  Sometimes I put it in green tea for the added boost.  Old timers around here swear by it.
