Most here on this forum seem mechanically inclined but I thought I'd pass along a friendly reminder about BOV and everyday vehicle maintenance...fuel filters.

My F150 has 150k miles on it and have noticed it was starting to idle rough.  Not knowing the last time it was changed, I crawled underneath and found the fuel filter to be old and rusty. So, 20 minutes and a new filter later, the truck is running great and should get better mileage too.

I just hit 100k, definitely need to do this soon.

Oh, I just learned this the hard way.  When your serpentine belt falls off and gets shredded, replace the tensioner too. I had to replace my belt twice in a week on the side of the road.  Not an easy task on a fwd car that has the tensioner hiding behind the passenger side wheel.

Maybe I'm an oddball because I drive a diesel, but I change my fuel filter every 15-20k miles, and always carry a spare.  150K miles on any filter is way over the top...

Nope...it make you a member in our 'special' club
Mine is getting a fuel filter change probably next week or so and I'll have the spare in the toolbox. Next step is deleting the DPS BS to up my MPG's

They are cheap enough for my car I replace them WELL before they show signs of aging, and keep the best looking one in the spare parts and fluid actionpacker in the back of the car.

Maybe it is me, but if a part is "cheap" enough to replace way early, then why carry around an old part?  A new part would be cleaner therefore probably easier to keep on hand.

why not just carry the next service replacement, so that when you buy a filter you are buying the part that you will be using for the service after next?

Heck, I replace my car batteries at five years rather than wait on the inevitable fail.

All y'all that keep your things fixed and don't wait for a failure.  What is up with that, and where is the fun in life without some emergencies?  Wow TJ I bet you don not even have a thread in GD about relationship problems just because you do not like drama

Nah, next anniversary with the wife will be number 40 and no relationship drama in the 40 years.  I do preventative maintenance on my marriage too.

On a vehicle a little emergency crisis may be fun but on a marriage, you never know when that engine will freeze up on you.  Failure mode is not as predictable.

Oil and oil filter every 5k, coolant nitrite test every 5k, fuel filters every 10k. Always carry a spare fuel filter set with me, along with spare turbo/intercooler boots and clamps, will add serpentine belts and tensioners to the spares list soon. At least no timing belts to worry about (gear drive).

I wish my car batteries lasted 5 years.

The heat here is murder on batteries.  2 or 3 summers is pretty damn good.

On the bright side, if you get the 36 month free replacement batteries, you'll never pay for another one again...

I do the 5 year replacement on diesels: seems first cold snap after 5 years does them in.
Gas motors, I run them till they die,. Had a 1990 Ford PU's original batt make it 9 years and 10 months!
